Hi Anne,
I am descended from John Hopkins Pugh and Agnes Helen Mackmurdo.
They had a daughter Catherine Thorrowgood Pugh (that's on the birth certificate but her name was actually Katharine Thorowgood Pugh) DOB 10 feb 1888.
Somehow she moved to Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). She married Sidney Prescott Light (DOB 26/9/1868). He was born in Poona India and lived there till he was 6 (son of Richard evelyn Hough Light born in England 1834.) Sidney then moved on his own to New zealand and bought a farm there. Then he moved to south Africa where he owned a farm. In 1916 he bought a farm in Umvuukwes in Zimbabwe and named it Lucknow after the place in India.
Sidney married Katharine on May 1st 1926 and they had two children - Richard Evelyn John Light 1928 ( I guess the John named after Katharine's dad) and my mother Cynthia Winifred Light (1929). Sydney died and Katharine moved to the Cape with two small children to catch a boat to England. However war broke out and they were trapped in Cape Town. They went to school in the cape and Katharine never sold the farm. Richard light eventually took over the farm. He had three boys Anthony (living in UK), Andrew (living in Australia) and Phillip (living in Zimbabawe). Phillip took over the farm which was expropriated in 2000 by Mugabe. My mother married Walter John Weeden (son of Walter Horace Frederick Weeden). WHFW was the son of Walter Frederick Weeden who came from England to run Eastman Kodak in Africa. And I am Walter Graeme Weeden!! My mother still lives in Cape Town as do I. My eldest son is Walter Thomas Weeden (all 1st born sons take the name Walter)

Hi Walter

I'm really glad you posted on this forum because I've heard about your branch of the family- although I didn't know your name, I knew of Katherine, Sydney, Cynthia and Richard.

I am also descended from John Hopkins Pugh and Agnes Helen Mackmurdo through his son Baldwyn.

The information you posted is really interesting especially since Baldwyn's sons Edward and Martin (first name was really Cuthbert!) Pugh were both POWs in the second world war and I've been told they tried to get to safety in South Africa and stay with the Lights. Unfortunately they were captured and died as POWs in Thailand.

Maybe you have some more information, or other stories you know of. I'd love to see a picture of Katherine and Sydney too. Feel free to send me a message.

Regards

Helena

Hi Walter,
I am sorry but just found I have not replied to you.
I am about to pick up the research on Mackmurdo again.
I knew of Katherine Thorowgood Pugh but nothing after her.
My info is prior to that and they did have so many children!

I also did not reply to HelenaP so hopefully we can pool some information.
Again many apologies for the very late reply.
