Thank you Peter!  Perfect!  How nice of you! I really appreciate the census!

Hi Judy,

Just to make your census complete I have found the 1841  entry for George.  Here goes   ...

HO107/438/17   F.7.  P.8.  London Colney.
Thos Fearn  65  Labourer
Mary Fearn  60
Sarah Fearn  27
George 22 Ag Lab
Charles 20  Ag Lab
All born in county.

Whilst trawling I also found an entry for an Ann Childs age 20  a servant with Thomas 60 and Mary 65 Hipgrave  ag lab at London Colney (Ref.107/442/3  F.39.  P.4.)

Adult ages in 1841 were rounded down to the nearest 5.

Hope this helps.

Regards   ...   Peter

Hi

I have probably come a little late to this post as I have only just joined, but I am researching the same Masling family from London Colney.

I also have a link to a Jane Masling born c 1853 in Shenley, Hertfordshire, her parents being John Masling born c 1816 and Elizabeth ? born c 1825 Shenley. Is this the Jane Masling being talked about in these messages?

It is their daughter, Emma Masling born c 1857 that I am seeking information on in particular. Although I also need information on her siblings.

Emma married a Robert Jeffries in 1890 in St Albans and this is the connection I am trying to find more information on. Emma and Robert had 3 children that I am aware of at present, Henry c 1892, Percy c 1893 and Horace c 1896 all born in St Albans.

If anyone can kindly fill in gaps or point me in the right direction I'd be very grateful. In particular I'm trying to work out who married who in the Masling family.

thanks

Lilian

Hello Lilian

It’s never too late and welcome!

The Jane you’re interested in, is Jane with no middle name, not Jane Maria.

As mentioned a few posts above there were two Jane Maslin(g)s born about two years apart.  They’re cousins with their mothers being sisters and their fathers being brothers.    Because someone has the wrong Jane marrying into my FANE (Fearne)  family on Ancestry.com and RootsWeb’s family trees, I took time to look up both Janes so my records are accurate.

The information for Jane can be found in the London Colney parish records which are available to order on microfilm through the LDS Family History Centers.

Jane may have been born in Shenley as you mention, however her baptism is found in London Colney .

Baptised May 1, 1853  Jane d/o John, labourer and Elizabeth MASLIN
Born in Jan. 23, 1853
- also found in the IGI
- I’m sorry I don’t have any information on Jane’s siblings, however they’re listed as being baptised in London Colney in the online IGI by clicking on the Jane’s name and “batch number”  for the surname Maslin.

Marriage:
May 3, 1874, London Colney
Jane, daughter of John Maslin, labourer  age 21,  a spinster
to
John LONG.  John’s father’s first name is very difficult to make out.
-   interestingly enough the witnesses are James Fane and Jane Fane (nee Jane Maria Maslin, her cousin)
-    I haven’t followed up for children for this couple.  Hopefully the census will    help you.

Marriage for Jane’s parents
September 9, 1849  London Colney
John Maslin, full age, bachelor, labourer,
Father Robert Maslin (& Elizabeth NORRIS)
to
Betsy or Elizabeth OLNEY, full age, spinster,  Father William Olney (& Sarah Ann ANTHONY)

The London Colney marriages haven't been transcribed to the IGI, so the parish records need to be seen.   You may find the Free BMD is a help to you as well.

I'm sorry I don't have the information you're asking for about Emma,  but hopefully I have filled in a gap or two for you in other places.

Judy

Hi Judy
Hadn't thought about your Fearne/Fane's for a while since my unsuccessful graveyard hunt  :'(
If you let me know what you've got from 1901, I'll have a look in the Kelly's directories and Electoral registers and see who I can track down  :)

Hi Julie

Thanks for the welcome, I've been a bit busy, so I have only just got back to the Masling family.

I have now got a birth certificate for Emma Masling born 8/6/1855 at Broad Colney Shenley. Her parents are John Masling and Emma Masling nee Olney. So I'm looking for any information on siblings to Emma with these parents. The 1861 census shows a brother John born c 1851, Jane c 1853, Thomas c 1858 and William c 1860. All these children are born in Shenley. I have found the baptisms for these children on the LDS site, also a possible sibling Elizabeth baptised 7 June 1863. I will need to check out the 1871 census onwards for these siblings as well as try and track marriages.

I have obtained the marriage certificate for Emma to Robert Jeffries on 18 Oct 1890 at the Parish Church, St Peters, St Albans. I have found 3 of their children as mentioned before, in the 1901 census, Henry R (obert) I think, c 1892, Percy c 1893 and Horace c 1896 all born in St Albans. The family is living at 40 Inkmark Rd, St Peter, St Albans, in 1901 - I'm not sure yet whether I have the correct spelling for the name of the road.

I am hoping to track down any other children of the marriage of Robert Jeffries to Emma Masling who presumably would have been baptised in the St Albans area. Although there may not be any more - Emma is 9 years older than Robert. She was 35 when she married Robert in 1890. They lived in Spencer St, St Peters St Albans at the time of the marriage.
I also know that Robert's father Henry Jeffries was a fishmonger in St Albans.

It also appears that Emma had a couple of children out of wedlock Albert Masling born 4 June 1877, and Amy Masling born c 1879 (who died died at Inkerman Rd on 15 December 1896). I have not been able to locate Albert yet in the 1881 census or later.

I haven't been able to locate any deaths for either Robert or Emma Jeffries yet, and I don't know what happened to their 3 boys I have found so far , no baptisms, - I'm  also wondering whether they went to WWI.
Many thanks for the offer I really appreciate this.

Lilian

Hello,
Just picked up this thread. I would be interested in anything you have on the Medcalfs of Enfiled.
Many thanks, Linda
