Strange 1881 census entry
« on: Wednesday 22 November 06 16:56 GMT (UK) »
I am researching Sarah Maddox and have found her in 1881 4 years after her marriage to Alfred maddox but the entry is strange.

the three entries are:-

Christopher Potts - Lodger - unmarried age 26
Sarah Potts Alias Maddox - as wife - married - age 29
Elizabeth Ann Maddox - Daughter -- age 2

in 1891 I have Sarah Maddox, her husband Alfred and by then two children Elizabeth and Fanny at home.

I'm confused by the 1881 entry for Sarah and would welcome and advice on what this might mean does anyone have any idea on the alias and / or the "as wife" comment.

This is also a comment against sarah's occupation and and against christopher in the invalidity column.

I'd welcome any view on what these entries might mean

thanks in advance

the comment in the last column has 'braced' Mary Ann Roberts and Chris' Potts together .. 'Living as man and wife -?represented / requested?- by fam? ' ?

The occupation of Ammo worker has been qualified as 'Fuser' by the Enumerator

Never seen the alias use before !

Looks as though Sarah dumped Maddox and set up house (or at least a room in a lodging house?) with Christopher, but must have decided to go back to her husband later.

I think it says 'Fuse' next to ammunition worker; the comment about living together as man and wife presumably refers to Sarah and Christopher, rather than Mary Ann Roberts, who's only one year old :)

Good one!!

Obviously little Mary Potts isnt living with Chris Potts as man ans wife, as she is only 1! I think the enumerator has banded the wrong lines together and he meant to link Chris Potts with Sarah alias Maddox

I would guess that he also means Sarah Maddox alias Potts, in other words she is actually Sarah maddox, because she is married to Alfred Maddox, but sh eis calling herself Sarah Potts, cos she is living with Chrsi Potts as his wife.

Alfred must have been either ignorant or very forgiving, as it appears she has gone back to him by 1891.

That is my guess as to what is going on - but it is only a guess. We will probably never know!
