Mariner/Death at Sea/Watchet.Somerset
« on: Sunday 14 November 04 23:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi peeps,
Could anyone tell me please,is there a site for Deaths at Sea,
I am looking for a William Webber born approx 1850?St Declumans,Williton,Somerset.I cannot find his death anywhere.
I know for a certainty that he drowned at sea.My grandmother Elizabeth Webber was born Feb 1883,and she told me her father drowned just before she was born.So that would put his date of death somewhere between.
June 1882,Feb 1883.
I have his wife Louisa Webber, and other children.
William 1875
Elizabeth 1875,she died when she was about 7years old.
Elizabeth 1883 my grandmother.
Wouldnt like to waste anyones time,on the other family members,
only trying to find death of William.
thanks,
bennett.

Hi, a couple of things come to mind, firstly, I would have thought that deaths would still be in the civil registry, therefor there would have to be an entry in the bmd indices.
Secondly, I wonder if you might be able to look at (or if you do not live in the area, if someone could look for you) the RNLI stations in the area you are searching.
They always have boards around the station showing call-outs and casualties at sea.

Do you have his entry in 1881?
I don't have my discs to hand at the mo, but I'll check back in the morning and look him up if I have 2 minutes. There may be a clue as to which vessel he might of been on, or an idea as to the best place to look for him.

Good luck.

Hi Tonia,
Thanks for your message.I am not near any RNLI stations, unfortunately,on the 1881 census,I can only see
Louisa Webber head-married-mariners wife,plus children.
He must have been alive then, probably at sea.
As I said my grandmother was born Feb 1883,so she was conceived June 1882ish,so he must have died between these dates.
The only William Webber who died in Sept 1883 aged 21?could not be the one.
The mind boggles as to where else I could look, there must be places, but I cant think where.
Thanks for any help.
regards
bennett.
