beegee ... Where are you? (Charltons of Heworth/Gateshead).
« Reply #3 on: Monday 20 November 06 11:33 GMT (UK) »
Hello beegee,

If you get in touch I can give you MASSES of detail about the family of Edward and Ann Charlton who were in the 1841 C. (Heworth) and 1851 C. (Gateshead).

Here's a taster: Her name was Ann Cuthbertson, the daughter of John (from Dunfermline).  Her birthday in 1807 is on the IGI (All Saints', Newcastle - christened 1808).  Do you know they moved to Jarrow and were living there at the time of the 1871 C.?  Their daughter Ann became Ann Carrick and you can find her and her family in all the censuses from 1871 (Gateshead throughout).  There's a lot more if you're interested.

I attempted to send you an earlier e-mail last week but it must have failed to reach you and I cannot now find your name on the Durham message board anywhere.

All for now.

JL. (Peter).

Hi Peter,

I am pleased to see you have found a connection.  I just added your post to beegee's thread, to make sure it is not missed. If you are ever looking for something you can't find just try the search rootschat feature at the top centre of the page. In this case I just typed in Charlton Heworth.  ;D

All the best...........Kris  :D

Hello Kris,

Thanks for adding my name to the beegee thread.  I'm in a position to help someone out hugely and it would be a shame not to do so.
Additionally, thanks for the guidance about using search rootschat.  I didn't know about this, duh!

Hi Bee,

Ann Cuthbertson was born on 1 July 1807 in Gosforth, Newcastle, and christened in All Saints', Newcastle, on 24 January 1808.  She was the second daughter of John Cuthbertson of Dunfermline and his wife Jane Byres - who was the daughter of William Byres of Carlisle, Cumberland.  I haven't been able to find the elder d's details yet.

She married Edward Charlton in All Saints' on 11 May 1834.  She died on 9 January 1886 (aged 78).  At the time she lived at White House Barns Farm, Windy Nook, Felling.

Edward C. died on 22 April 1891, aged 81.  He was living at Weathercock Lane, Low Fell, Gateshead.  The informant was his only son, George.  There's no sign of him in the 1891 C.

Their eldest child, Isabella, was C. on 7 December 1834 in St. Andrew's, Newcastle.  Their address then was given as 'Town Moor, Benwell'.  She probably married a man named Marshall.  As you know Thomas Marshall is living with his grandparents in the 1871 C. in Jarrow.  When they moved back to the Gateshead area [1881 C. -Square Houses] he continued living in Jarrow.  Indeed, in the 1891 C. he's living next door to his uncle, George Charlton, both having their own butcher's business.  He died (aged 47) on 12 October 1899 [Living 271 Albert Road, Jarrow].

Ann Charlton was born on 4 June 1844 at Bog House Farm, Heworth.  She was christened on 7 July 1844: St. Mary's, Heworth.  She married William Carrick in St. Mary's, Heworth, on 12 February 1868.  She died, aged 66, on 20 February 1911 - living 26 Shipcote Terrace, Gateshead., her husband (a gardener) having pre-deceased her.  The informant was her son, H.C. Carrick.  You'll find the Carricks on the 1871 - 91 censuses living at Saltwell Grove Lodge.  By 1901 they're in Shipcote Tce.

George Charlton was C. in St. Mary's, Heworth, on 27 February 1842.  His birth wasn't registered.  Born Bog House - what a fabulous name, eh!  A Bog House Estate still exists in Felling.  Pensioners' bungalows now lie on the site.  It would originally have had a fabulous view downhill towards the Tyne Valley.
He married twice: 1. To Hannah Elizabeth Pattinson.  M. 10 June 1866 (St. John's, Newcastle)  She died, aged 29, on 16 Sept. 1874.  They were then living at 351 High St., Gateshead.  George had his butcher's business on the High St.

With his first wife he had three children:
Ann Ellen Charlton (birth not registered), c. 1868 or 1869. (2 in 1871 C.)  She died on 15 November 1873, aged 6, at 16 Sunderland St. = the address where George's apprentice, John Whittle, lived [cf. 1871 C.].
Edward C. B. 1869 or 1870 (1 in 1871 C.) D. 11 October 1873, aged 3, at 251 High St., Gateshead.  The two bairns died of scarlet fever.  Clearly they unavailingly hoped to save Ann by moving her to a 'safer' home when the lad became ill.
Margaret C. Born 14 August 1873 (251 High St.)  Married James Alfred Armstrong in St. John's, Newcastle, on 25 July 1893.  For about forty years she lived in the family home in Jarrow - 42 Grange Road West - dying there, aged 86, on 15 August 1959.  My mum and her two sisters remembered their Auntie Madge well.  Her husband was buried on 11 November 1937.

Regards.

JL. (Peter).

Hello again Bee,

George's second wife was Elizabeth Salmon, born Great Clacton, Essex, on 6 June 1850.  She was the ninth child (of eleven) of John Wilson Salmon and Mary Coulson.  They married in St. Cuthbert's, Windmill Hills, Gateshead, on 10 March 1878.  She died (of apoplexy) on 18 March 1904, aged 53, at 42 Grange Rd. West, Jarrow.  I have TONS of info. relating to HER ancestry since her family lived for years in this small Essex village and the parish priests get good records which have survived remarkably well.

She and George had five sons.  I'll just give you the basic skeleton:

1. Cuthbertson (given his granny's surname as a first name).  B. 27 August 1878 at 77 Burt Terrace, Gateshead.  M. Annie Purvis - 12 Oct. 1902 at St. James', Benwell.  D. 25 Sept. 1942 in Station Rd., Newburn, aged 64.  He was then living at 23 Warkworth Crescent, Newburn.  He lived in Newburn for over forty years and used to have his own butcher's business.  He had ten children.
2.  Henry Garnet (MY great grandfather). B. 15 Sept. 1882 at 1 Hurworth St., Jarrow. M. Mary Elizabeth(Minnie) Walton on 3 Sept. 1906 at Good Shepherd, Jarrow.  D. 21 January 1954, aged 71.  He was living at 17 West View Tce., Dunston.  He had four sons and two daughters.  His three granddaughters, including my mum, still live in Jarrow.
3.  Norman. B. 9 Dec. 1884. M. Alexandria Alice Wright on 25 June 1913 and d, aged 88, on 21 July 1973 (living 32 Lumley Tce., Jarrow).  He had three sons.  The youngest, Cyril, still lives in Jarrow, the only one left from his generation.
4.  Edward. B. 4 Feb. 1891 (42 Grange Rd. W.). M. Catherine Wade on 7 Fen. 1916 at Jarrow Grange. D., aged 63, on 13 March 1954 (living 170 Harton Lane, South Shields - directly opposite the old entrance to Harton Hospital.  He had two daughters.
5.. George. B. 16 June 1892. Buried 7 July 1892 (aged 3 weeks).

George Charlton himself died on 6 Sept. 1915 in Grange Rd. aged 73.
I have a framed A4-sized photograph of him when he must have been in his sixties with a terrific moustache and beard (the 'full set') hanging on my wall at home.  Would you believe he's wearing he's striped butcher's pinny.  Priceless!

I'll leave it at that for now.  Hopefully I've told you a lot of what you'd like to know and saved you the bother of MANY hours of research to find the above yourself.

Where do YOU fit into the above?  Was Edward Charlton a direct ancestor of yours?  He was my great, great, great granddad.   I haven't been able to find his baptism in the Bedlington area yet.  Maybe you will have better luck.

Peter.

What can I say .... I'm overwhelmed .... and apologise for not getting back to Rootschat sooner.  I am printing off your info to digest it better.  I've been researching the Marshall family - connected through Edward Charlton's daughter Isabella.  Edward was living with Isabella in the 1891 census, he was age 80.  Isabella married John Marshall in 1852
I was hitting a brickwall with this family - although I had them on a few census records.  They appear to have raised young Thomas Marshall - Butcher.

I am extremely grateful for all the information you're sharing with me Peter and of course thank you to Pels too for the 1871 info.

I'm going to make a cup of tea and read your info through
Thank you again
