Inverness census Parishes
« on: Sunday 19 November 06 14:30 GMT (UK) »
Running into the same trouble with Inverness census parishes, MALL, MONI, etc., as I did with Tyrone Townlands.   And - googling doesn't really help.
To me what I'm looking for is simple - Inverness Census which includes (and mentions) Spean Bridge.
Anyone help?

Hi Farmer

Nor sure if this is what you want but here's a parish map of Invernessshire:

PS it would be in Kilmonivaig Parish

Hi Gadget,
Thanks - great website.    Kilmonivaig, thanks.    As you probably know, the census reads like -
Moni Nevis Bridge, House No, then individuals data.
No indication of where or what Nevis Bridge is, or what No 1 is.
They're all the same.   I have a house name in Spean Bridge, I can't pin it down.   Generations of my family have lived there.
But thanks for your help Gadget, I have moved a bit forward.
Pete

Hi Pete

Spean Bridge is not that big. I've passed through it many times and even stayed there once  :)

The current road swings in a kind of dog leg over the river  as far as I can recall. An hotel is just beyond the bend. This may well be Nevis Bridge. I'd try www.multimap.co.uk if I were you. Put in Spean Bridge and zoom in.

Hi again Pete

Nevis Bridge is not part of Spean Bridge. Today, Nevis Bridge seems to be in Fort William itself:

There is a Nevis Bridge on the 1881 census, recorded in Kilmallie parish in Argyllshire.  The 1876 OS map of the Fort William area calls it Bridge of Nevis.

Hi Pete

The parish map for Argyll can be found here:

http://www.scotlandsfamily.com/parish-map-argyll.htm

Kilmalie, Argyll is adjacent to Kilmonivaig, Inverness.

Spean Bridge is in Kilmonivaig but Nevis Bridge is in Kilmalie.

I'm now assuming that you have two separate families  :-\

Hi folks
I think I misled you there, I was giving an example of the census when I mentioned Nevis Bridge.
I've done as you suggested Gadget, got a good idea of the area now, Roybridge, Inveroy, Blarour.
I'm about ready to go into Scotland's People now, although a few visits to the registrar's office couldn't turn up my mother's birth details, I'm not too sure I can.
So thanks Gadget and Little Nell for your help
cheers
Pete
