You can search the 1881 census free here:

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp

Use the date of birth & place information that you have as a guide - it might vary a bit, as might spellings, but don;t be put off!

I will have a look too - I am using Edith's name as it is more unusual.

I would be inclined to check that you have the right family before doing too much, just to be certain.

Did you find them?

  RG11
  Piece / Folio   3123 / 86
  Page Number   14

Thomas BATES H M 31 - gardener - Hungarton
Kate W M 31 - Countesthrope
Mary E dau 9 - scholar - Hungarton
Rose dau 7 - do - do
George son 4 - do - do
Edith A dau 2 - do
John S COTTON lodger U 18 - ag lab - Lubenham

Hungarton, Leicestershire

You need to look at the marriage of Thomas and Kate next, to see where she is in 1871 you need her maiden name, probably.

Will see if Thomas is showing up.

This looks as good match for Thomas, because the occupation matches:

Thanks again Arranroots - gosh you were busy yesterday!

You can guess what I am going through this evening!

I will forward all your info on to my student, hopefully she has signed up herself - but if not a little letter with her information might prompt her.

It did get quite confusing running around eight students but it was good fun

Thanks again

Quenby Hall is within walking distance of Hungerton - they are making Stilton Cheese - check out the web site  "quenbystilton.co.uk"  it is very interesting.

Thank you very much, this was a reply to one of my students on Saturdays course.  I will pass on the info and ask them to create their own user name and log in.

Cheers
