I am a firm believer that my wife's relative Phoebe Tearle could be a mis-written Searle.

Anyone else think similar or that I could even be correct???

Forgot to ask if you've used the Search facility to check for Phoebe Searle on the Hertfordshire boards?

I did and several posts regarding a Phoebe Searle came up, of course I can't say if any or all are your Phoebe Tearle.

By the way my maternal grandmother was an Essex Searles, a sibling of one of my Searles ancestors, Henry Searles was baptised 19 Feb1797 in Felsted, Essex, Henry married a Mary Wright in 1820 in Sawbridgeworth and started a Hertfordshire line.

I have been researching the Searles name in Bishop Stortford and the Henry Searles that married Mary Wright are my x 3 greatgrandparents,Henry Searles was born in Felstead to Thomas Searles and his wife Mary ( possibly Ingham) Henry moved to Hertfordshire before 1820 and had several children, all of these children were christened in  Water Lane Independent Church.  Being possibly the first generation of his family to live in Bishop Stortford, I haven't found any mention of your Searles but if I do will certainly let you know.

Hi Jericho,

Just thought I'd mention that Henry's mother (wife of Thomas Searles) was Mary Gunn and that's all I know of her,  Mary has eluded me for years but I have recently found a possible candidate who I will follow up, I won't be holding my breath though.

Have had a quick look on IGI and Thomas Searles and Mary Gunn had their 1st child in abt 1746 and as my Henry was born 1797, I'm  not convinced that these are Henry parents, just seems like too much of a stretch to me, having your last child 50 years after your first one was born. Unless of course there is another Mary Gunn who married a Thomas Searles much later.
