Hi Sue,
After spending 2 hours looking at a fische(?) screen I thought I deserved a rest - so have come and sat in front of a computer screen instead

Right - GOOD News

- and not so good news

I
may have found your family - well I have found the correct names and ages!

BUT not together - anyway here goes:
Hollins Lane - Tilstock (hamlet outside of Whitchurch)
William Allen - 15 - Ap. - N (not born in county!)
at the home of Thomas Cook - 35 - Farmer, together with Mary - 35 - and Holling - 11 - also Gillian Hamlett - 20 - F S (farm servant?) - all born in county
(William didn't marry a Gillian by any remote chance?)
There were 4 other "Allen" families which I made a note of - but not the correct names - you can have them if you want. (William aged 6 - father William etc)
I then went right through the census and the last building was the "House of Industry" (better known as the work house!!)
Robert Allen - 75 - Shoemaker - Y
George Allen - 55 - Ag Lab - N
Sarah Allen - 10 - N
These names were NOT together - I noticed all the children were written down together - Adults first.
So we have 3 out of 4 of your family - but is it a family.
Maybe - the 15 year old William could earn his keep and so was sent to live on a farm - the other 2 could not and so were in the work house! But that is only my imagination working overtime - again!!
I also had a look at the baptisms for Whitchurch from 1823 (don't trust your lot!) to 1831 and no William!! (or any Allens for that matter!!)
So I am really not sure if I have been any help - I could make a good case for them being your "lot" but no proof - have you John's birth details/certificate - anything on their mother?
Cheers
Keith
