Mellanby from Stockton
« on: Tuesday 14 November 06 12:46 GMT (UK) »
Is anyone researching a Mellanby Family from Stockton please.

1851
Living at 21 Thompson Street, Stockton on Tees, Co Durham.
John Mellanby born abt 1796 Stockton, Co Durham, a Ship Wright.
Sarah Mellanby born abt 1795 Willington, Co Durham
Robert Mellanby born abt 1832 Stockton, a blacksmith
Sarah Mellanby born abt 1835 Stockton

I think John Mellanby's parents were William Mellanby and Rachael Wilkinson, as John also had other children, one daughter called Rachael.

I am trying to find a marriage for John and Sarah to find her maiden name.

Thanks

Hello Fay

I am researching Mellanby generally, probably because when I am not on Rootschat my name is John Mellanby.

I'll reply in detail when I have had a chance to look at my records.

Hello fay

A few bits of information which you might be able to make something of:

William Mellanby married Rachel Wilkinson on 19 Nov 1793 at St Thomas's, Stockton

John Mellanby married Sarah Taylor on 11 Aug 1822 at St Thomas's, Stockton (not certain about the precise date)

Just to complicate matters I have a note that William Mellanby, a shipbuilder, died in 1814 at the age of 55. His widow was Elizabeth but he was married twice previously. I wonder if Rachael was an earlier wife? I mention this because I have a recollection elsewhere of a child apparently being named after the father's previous wife - it seemed obvious when the forename was a little unusual.

Hope this helps

Thanks John, I didn't know about William's other wives, I have him dying in Stockton on 22nd Oct 1839 but maybe I have the wrong William if the other one is a shipwright......do you know who this William is?

I'll have to try and find out when Rachael Wilkinson died, then I'll know who was John's mother, he was born in 1796.....I think it must be Rachael Wilkinson, if they married in 1793.

I come down from the Daughter Rachael 1826, so I assumed that Rachael Wilkinson was her grandmother. I haven't sent for Rachael's birth cert. yet but I do have her marriage cert. to William Lidster in 1851........father John Mellanby, Shipwright. It doesn't give the name of the church, just 'the Parish Church' Stockton upon Tees......Anne Mellanby (her sister) was one of her witnesses. Her father John died in 1856 age 60 and mother Sarah died in 1862.

Rachael and  William Lidster lived in Kirk Merrington, where he came from......she is buried in the church cemetery with William and quite a few of their children. One of them being Thomas Mellanby Lidster, who died age 22 at Leasingthorne Colliery.

I'm so pleased to have Sarah's maiden name, thankyou so much, it's great.
If I can help in any way, just let me know

To all Mellanby / Mellonby / Melomby researchers:

I recently received three pages (copies) from an old Mellanby Family Bible. In it they spell their name 'Melomby' but in all the Census records it's written Mellanby or Mellonby or even Mellamby.

Some of the names mentioned in the Bible are; Mary, Isabella, Thomas, Louisa, etc.

Anyway, I am related to them via my great-grandmother, Ada Winter - her mother was Frances Mellanby born 1853 in Durham (not sure where in Durham - probably Stockton.) I'm also in touch with a chap who is related to the same branch.

If anyone feels this would be at all helpful to their research, I'll happily share my copies of the Family Bible. If there is a connection, I'd appreciate any info you could give me because I only have my Mellanby line back to 1827, with the birth of Ralph (father of Frances).

Kind regards,
Sheridan

Hi All,

The various spellings of Mellanby are a good example to FH researchers not to be put off by strange spellings. The most bizarre version of this name that I have come across is McUanby. Think about scrawly handwriting and you may see how it came about!

Hello all,

Me again. I'm afraid I posted some 'out of date' info a few minutes ago. (I was copying from the wrong file).

My Frances Mellanby (b. 1853, Durham) was not the daughter of Ralph & Elizabeth but instead of Philip Mellanby & Anne Chambers (b. 1830 Middleton One Row, Yorks).
Philip Mellanby was born in 1822 in Birkby, Yorks.
Philip's father was John Mellanby born (according to info I got from someone else) in 1793 in Birkby, Yorks.
His mother I have only as 'Frances' born 1796 also in Birkby. Could she be one of the 3 wives of the John Mellanby mentioned earlier?

Sorry to have posted incorrect or confusing info - I hope this is clearer now.

Regards,
Sheridan

Hi Sheridan and John...... I haven't been doing much on this side of the family for a while .......... but the names sheridan has been coming up with are not in my family.  ...... Frances....Phillip..........Ralph

Mine are all John, Sarah, Rachael, Robert...Ann

This is my my family in 1841...... and I can't get any further back.
In 1841
Living at Sunniside, Hartlepool, Co Durham.
John Mellanby 45, a Shipwright, born Stockton
Sarah Mellanby 45  born Willington
Their children at home are,
Sarah Mellanby 6
Ann Mellanby 15 a dressmaker
Rachael Mellanby 15 born Portrack, Stockton 1826
Robert Mellanby 9
All born in Co Durham.
Looking at the way the children are named in the census...with Sarah 6 coming first and the two older girls in the middle...... maybe the two older girls were with a different wife.... although on Family Search Rachael's mother was Sarah Mellanby......
I'll have to spend more time on this family and get it sorted
Jean ...... please keep posting with any info...no matter how small.
