The George A. Cherry of 1900 was aged 38 (though his birthdate was given as October 1870) born in New York. He stated his parents were also born in New York. His occupation was a painter.
On the 1920 census in Manhatten however (still married to Bertha with one son Robert aged 13) he was a physician in general practice aged 49 born New York, with parents born Ireland. Ditto 1930 census but parents were back to being born in New York.

Thanks V V much don't think he is my George Alton Cherry my one came to England and Died in 1891 aged only 31 - 33 but he had a son named after him my G Grandfather with my G G Grandmother Martha Cherry (Norman) but mine was a GP. Thanks again for taking the time to look them up Regards Lee.

There are two George Cherrys on the 1881 Canadian census both aged  19 and born in Ontario.

I can't see a marriage for George Alton Cherry between 1891 and 1893.

Hi halsaps,

If your guy is indeed the Canadian one that Valda refers to , then I would concentrate your efforts on the 19-year-old in 1881 who lives in York West (now part of Toronto).  He is listed as being a student and is much more likely to be your doctor than the other guy who lives in Lanark, a rural county.    (That one is still in Burgess, Lanark in 1901)

I can find no reference yet to him having a middle name of Alton, which would prove your link, but I do see that the sister from the 1881 entry - Ruth - marries in 1891 and the father - Abner - dies in 1923, both in York Co.  So at least you know the rest of the family stayed even if George left. 

I can find no reference to a marriage of a George Cherry to a Martha in the Ontario BMDs, but then he is single in 1891 so I would expect the marriage to be in England. 

You might want to check www.pagesofthepast.com (digital archives of the Toronto Star) for a report of George's death in 1893.  If this is indeed his family, I would expect that his death in England would have been reported. 

You might also try emailing the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine Alumni Association to see if they have any sources that would indicate a George Cherry being a medical student in the early 1880s.

thanks for your replies. I am still not for deffinate sure wheather he was Canadian or American because I have also seen on Ancestry a George Alton Cherry on the Passenger lists
who came to England in 1887 but I will follow up your leads you have given me.
