Hi nataz

I'm just wondering what evidence you have that the John Rickman who served with Captain Cook originated from Hampshire.  Any clues?  I see that there are Rickmans from around the Lymington area but I presume there were others as well.

I'm afraid I did not take this any further, since nataz (who asked the original question) did not supply any further information about why it was thought John Rickman came from Hampshire.  It seemed unwise to go any further without some proof as to his origins.

nataz has not been online here since 2012  :(

Hi Again Little Nell.

Thank you for the reply.
Lieutenant John Rickman was my Great Gt Gt Grandfather.I have traced the family from him to now but have had trouble finding his birth, or indeed his parents. Although he passed his Lieutenant papers in 1760, it would be another 16 years until he was commissioned. I know he spent some years in the merchant navy, which could account for the delay. I also think that because he anonymously had his log from the 3rd Cook expedition published, it caused animosity at the Admiralty.

I have also read that he was baptized at Titchfield, Hampshire, on 30th October 1737. Parents, William & Rebecca, nee Missing? Although no proof of this being correct. He died in 1818. If have read different ages at death at being 78 or 80.
If anyone  has anything more, I would be very grateful.
I have noticed that there are Rickman's,in London in the 1500's.

Thank you again

zish.

I wonder if the Tichfield History Society know anything about him.

Hi Bearkat.

Thank you for your reply.
Yes, I have read this website, in fact some of the information contained in it, was mine, which I was not credited for. I have ask about this but to no avail. This is one of the places I read about the Titchfield connection. There is no proof to this being Lieutenant Rickman's parents. Many years ago I did come across an index card at The Public Records Office, Kew, which showed the name Captain Rickman. It was a generation before Lt John Rickman and could have been a connection but I have not been able to find anything about this card or name since.
I feel this is gong to be task, tring to work this out.
Thank you once again for your kind help Bearkat.
All the very best

zish.

Not only have they not credited your research there is no reference for the baptism.  It's a precise date.

Is there a will for William or Rebecca RICKMAN?
