marriage lookup help MAnchester/Lancashire

I  am trying to locate the marriage of Ellen/Elleanor Taylor to a thomas nightingale maybe in the lancashire area.  I have looked at all the marriages from 1865 to 1891 when thomas died.

I did however find a references from 1870 march quarter ref 8d 279 MANCHESTER this has puzzled me as there were only three entries returned.

They were

Mary Foster
Thomas Gleeson
ELLEN TAYLOR

Where is the other male.

This is also the same on free BMD and Ancestry is this normal as is doesn't make sense to me or have am i missing something? Have i done all the research wrong.?

Has anyone any ideas why this is?

very often there are 3 males , 2 females, sometimes just one person- it just means that is all the names on that page only -couples aren't necessarily next to each other or even on the same page.
That is why when you request a marriage look up you will often get "on same page" -meaning the 2 names you are enquiring about are on that page -you can never be 100% who married who unless you have the certificate.

So you are not doing anything wrong -try looking for Thomas Nightingale in the same qtr -he may be on his own -or 2 men and 1 female -or any combination.

So  if (for Example) Ellen Taylors Index ref is 8d  279 then her husband index reference wouldn't be the same? Is there not a way to cross reference the indexes?

I assumed that persons married would have the same index reference!!

No -you haven't been doing it incorrectly - its just very frustrating at times - you'd think couples would be together - I'm sure our ancestors knew we were going to try to find them and decided to give us a run for our money!!!!

You can search the GRO free at ancestry-time consuming -but often worth it

  Try looking on the LANCS BMD this gives the names of both people who married.

Marriages start from 1837. also gives reference numbers and where records are kept.
