Did they exist?
« on: Monday 13 November 06 00:41 GMT (UK) »
Is it worth looking for members of our family we are not sure existed. If it is, how?
It is only family hearsay that my father, the youngest of three brothers, in fact had sisters who died! quite possibly before he was born in 1912. His parents married about 1900 in Poplar. I have no record or hints of their names. All brothers are no longer with us, there is no family member left who can throw any light other than 'that is what they heard too'. My Grandparents were Henry Payne b1872 and Mary Ann (Johnston) Payne b1870

Do you know where the births of the living children were registered?
Did they stay in one area?

You can search freeBMD
Deaths
just put in the surname Payne
1900 -1912
Look through for infant deaths
You may recognise names

Find ut where the children were likely to be buried and check the cemetery records.
I have found quite a few of mine this way -the burial records usually say "son/daughter" of whover-and often gives the fathers occupation, address whre they died.

Suz
Thornhill, Cresswell, Sisson, Harriman, Cripps, Eyre, Walter, Marson, Battison, Holmes, Bailey, Hardman, Fairhurst Noon-mainly in Derbys/Notts-but also Northampton, Oxford, Leics, Lancs-England

Nice work Iria - that sounds like you have the family spot on.  Should help Joel out.

Sorry I can't help Joel - not my branch of the family - my Paynes are from Leicestershire.  But I will keep tabs on this thread in case yours branches from there - I'm still in the process of tracking mine down too.

Happy hunting.
I am researching the following families:
Hurst / Payne - Leicestershire / Warwickshire / Worcestershire
Toon(e) - Leicestershire
Batchelor / Foster - Warwickshire / Northamptonshire
Hardy - Dorset

My web site has the family tree showing.  I am researching primarily the Payne, Hurst, Foster and Batchelor lines in the Midlands.

Thanks for the interest Suzard, Iria and Tony. Iria yes that is my family! I will have to look in BMD I guess. My Grandparents were married in 1900! with the Census in 1901! I am not going to get much more from there but thanks for that information. There are bit there I can use. I can remember my father saying about his sisters but in those  days I/we never paid much attention to what parents said, did we!
Suzard my father was born in Wyke Old Ford. I was born in Usher Road Old Ford 28 years later so no! there was not a lot of moving around until after the war.
Thanks for the tips. I will keep you posted!!
