Aberdeen City MIs
« on: Saturday 11 November 06 22:33 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone please help me find the burials/MIs for the following couple

Alexander & Elizabeth Shepherd (nee Pirie)
between 1841 and 1858 in Aberdeen, although I can't find either of them in the Civil Register after 1855.

They were living in the John Knox district of Aberdeen on the 1841 census and also have a connection with Old Machar.

I've looked them up with no luck on the ANES FHS website.

I'd be grateful for any help.

Sorry - forgot to say that the graveyards already checked on the ANESFHS site were John Knox and St Clement.

If anyone has access to any other graveyard MIs in Aberdeen city, especially Old Machar, I'd be grateful for a look up as mentioned in my first posting.

Jill,

I'd missed this post till today and don't know if you got a response...

Most of the Aberdeen city MI's are unavailable online unfortunately but you could try contacting the Local History Library at Aberdeen Central Library...I know that they have some MI's for the city in book form http://www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/ACCI/web/site/Libraries/NS/Lib_LocalStudies.asp

Aberdeen City Archives hold records of certain cemeteries but would be quite pricey without specific dates.

Thanks Elaine.

Aberdeen fhs hasn't been able to locate my missing ancestors for me but I hadn't thought of contacting the Archives. I see they have a search facility - £15 for half an hour is a bit pricier than most but I might go ahead anyway. This one has been bugging me for ages!!   :-\

Hi

What information do you have that points towards them still being in Aberdeenshire after the 1841 census?

I'm maybe throwing a spanner in the works but the only Alexander Shepherd married to an Elizabeth I could find in the 1851 census, is in Leslie, Fife.

When you look up Janet in the IGI, her mother is listed as Elizabeth CURRIE - possibly a transcription error? Her birth is c1816 which would tie up with the marriage in 1815 in Aberdeen of Alexander Shipheard and Elizabeth Pirie.

I'm probably completely wrong however - it wouldn't be the first time!

Gary,
Thanks so much for going to the trouble to look for my Alexander and Elizabeth. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure this is not them.   :'(

I have no evidence that they were still in Aberdeen after the 1841 census, but Alexander was getting on a bit (supposedly 70 in 1841) and they'd lived there for a good few years. I think it's possible that he had died by the 1851 census and Elizabeth (45 in 1841), if she was still with us, may have moved on, remarried etc etc!

I don't even know for sure where Alexander was born - just NOT in Aberdeenshire as per 1841 census return. However, I'm pretty sure it was in Marnoch, Banffshire. Elizabeth WAS born in Aberdeenshire.

Thank you for trying! It's appreciated.

I have most of the published booklets.   They're not in Dyce, New Machar or Newhills, all Aberdeen.   Old Machar hasn't been published (maybe not even done yet as they're all volunteers and most have "day jobs").
Tried Marnoch (2 editions) as well but no luck.
I'm a member of scotfamtree.11.forumer.com as well.    Might be worth a try as one of the members there does OPR look ups in Aberdeen FHS.
Good luck
Christine

Thanks Christine.

I suspect that it may well be John Knox cemetery but I wouldn't dismiss Old Machar as a possibility either.!

Thanks for looking.

I've checked John Knox but no Shepherd's there at all - at least not on the MI.
I've visited this cemetery and I'm pretty sure all the visible inscriptions have been recorded.   However, there are loads of people buried here without stones so your one could be there.
All I can say is they'll be found when they're good and ready!   Somewhere out there is a descendant with the missing link!
