LORD family of Dursley
« on: Tuesday 07 November 06 18:27 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I have recently been sent some information that states John LORD who I thought came from Lowestoft as he married there in Aug 1795 to Frances SHEPHERD was in fact from Dorsley, Gloucester (From Army Pension Records). Is this the same place as Dursley?
Is there anyone else out there with the LORD family from Dursley please? John LORD was born about 1774 in Dursley and joined the Royal Artillary aged 19, previous occupation Victualler.
Many thanks for your time
Jenny

On a general shuftie through the censuses there are a large amount of Lord's living in Slimbridge (next door to Dursley) and Coaley (up the road from Dursley).  So I would say it is certainly possible your ancestor was a Dursley chap.

The only Dorsley I can find appears to be in Devon.

Hello Bugsy,
Thanks for your reply. I will take a look at the 1841 for Slimbridge & Coaley and note the Lords there.
Hopefully I can see if anyone can look at the parish records in Dursley for me for the baptism & parents of John Lord 1774.
Would anyone on here know which parish church it would have been in this time frame?
Thanks & best wishes
Jenny

There is a John Lord bp 1775 at Slimbridge son of James Lord and his 1st wife Elizabeth Bendal who married at Slimbridge in 1769.

I haven't been able to establish whether this James Lord is the the one bp in North Nibley 1739 (son of Nathaniel Lord and his 2nd wife Sarah Jones)  or the James Lord bp 1744 at Uley.

Jenny,

You will find no LORD baptisms in any of the batches for Dursley at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountryEngland.htm nor will you find any submitted entries for Lords in the IGI (1770 +/- 10).

Regards

Chas
