Michael Rutherford Aged 45

This is very odd. He is exactly the right age in exactly the right District (and there do not seem to be any others of the same name on the censuses) which gives every indication that this was the husband of Margaret.

However, if it was, where did Margt (and possibly Mary) come from ??

There is no suitable birth registration in 1881 but I think that this is the appropriate one

Margaret Ann Rutherford.

Also the 1901 census shows her (with her husband Emanuel Tazey) born Auckland, aged 20. This also indicates a birth in 08/1880. Had her birth been 08/1881 she would have been 19 on census night 1901.
