1841 Census Lookup please.
« on: Tuesday 07 November 06 06:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Would someone kindly look up 1841 Census for:
Ann DOBER
She was born in Plymouth in 1819, parents Thomas and Lovedy. Ann turned up in Manchester, minus parents, for the 1851 Census and married Joseph MAMMATT later in the same year. She was probably a weaver.
In fact any DOBERs  would be great!

Babs  - Sorry, I'm not replying to your posting - I don't know how your posting got in on mine.
I have a reply to DavidPinkney, though.
You asked for Ann DOBER's 1851 Census details. Although I have a facsimilie of the relevant Census Enumeration Sheet, some of the info' was lost in transmission to me by a poster on another mailing list. However, the details I do have are;
Township - Manchester
Ecclesiastical District - St. George
City: Manchester
Address: 28 Fielden St
Other: Lodger, Unmarried, Age 22, Steam weaver, Born in Devonshire.
Sorry I can't give you the full details. Any help?
My earlier reply missed your second reply by the way.

I know this is an old post but just doing some research on the Dobers today and came across your post.
The children of Thomas Dober and Loveday Ferrell/Farrell/O,Farrell appear to be
Priscilla DOBER 1810–1884
Loveday DOBER 1813–
Ann DOBER 1819–
Thomas DOBER 1819–1867
James DOBER 1821–
Richard DOBER 1823–1912

The 1851 Census record is badly transcibed as:
Loveday Dowen        Mother   Greenwich, Kent
Thos Daves abt 1780   Wigan, Lancashire, England       Greenwich, Kent

as you will see Loveday's year or place of birth is not recorded but it is registered in Devon in 1783 as Lovedy Farrell O'Farrell.

Joseph and Ann Dober appear in the following census records as follows

1861 census
Name   Joseph Mammatt
Age   32
Relation Head
Where born Birmingham
Civil parish Hulme
Ecclesiastical parish St George
Town   Manchester

Age   62
Relation   Head
Where born Birmingham
Civil parish   Chorlton on Medlock
Ecclesiastical parish All Saints

Ann passed away 9 Jan 1901 • Chorlton, Lancashire
and Joseph 30 May 1905

Mammatt, Ann 147193663

Hi jewelz,

WOW! Yes, this is a pretty old posting of mine and I'm grateful for your response.

A lot has happened over the last ten years on the FH side of my life and many blanks have gradually been filled in. I haven't opened the Dober file for a long time but I still have a keen interest in it. Thank you for that very detailed info' on Ann Dober. I had the good fortune to visit the UK in 2012 and managed to visit the grave of Joseph, Ann and George Richard (my grandfather). It was a very warming and emotional moment for my son and I, but it was only one of many such moments we experienced during our travels.
I think I may already have all the details you've sent me, but I'll have to check through my records. Perhaps it will be better if we continue our conversation by e-mail, if that is appropriate. My e-mail address (*)

In closing, I remember the one thing that always eluded me was finding Ann in the 1841 Census.
You seem to be missing that, too.

Great to see are still doing your family history Chanel. Amazing to see old family Gravesites, it is quite a moving experience isn't it.

I believe Ancestry has Ann Dober recorded as Ann Deber in the 1841 Census. Ann Deber/Dober is a 20 year old Servant, living in Hall St, Manchester she is born in the census county.

Ann and her husband Joseph Mammatt were witnesses to her brother James Dober's second marriage to Mary Hughes, widow of John Moscrop. James first wife appears to Louisa but I can not find a marriage or a death for her but she appears with James and their family in 1851 in St Andrews, Manchester, Lancashire as Daber. Family search has it recorded as Doler:
James Daber 30 Born on Vessel at Sea,
Louisa Daber 34 Ardwick, Lancashire,
Ellen Daber 5 Manchester, Lancashire,
William Deber 4 Manchester, Lancashire,
Thomas Deber 2 Manchester, Lancashire,

I cannot locate either of them in the 1841 Census, so any help on that would be appreciated.

Yay,  after much searching  finally found the marriage of James DOBER to Louisa HARRISON on the 31 Mar 1834  under the name of James DOLBER he was a bachelor living in Eccles, Manchester as was Louisa. Her father is unnamed, as most likely she was illegitimate and her father was unknown. His father is named as Thomas Dolber, occupation: Weaver. James's sister Ann Dolber is the second witness with a Thomas O Neil being the first witness.

99.99%  of the trees on Ancestry have it incorrectly as James Dober marrying Mary Kelly which we now know is incorrect.

I can't believe the number of spelling variations for the name Dober, making it so difficult to research. I have come across it spelt as
Dolber, Dobber, Daber, Deber, Dover, Dauber, Daves and Dowen, you have to be very inventive with your searches.
