There was an enormous death rate in the 1800s of men and loss of ships. In 1884 the President of the Board of Trade commented that in mining the heaviest loss of life in one year was never more than 1 in 315 of those employed, whereas in shipping it was 1 in 60.
Between 1827 and 1829, 107 ships from Sunderland were lost, and between 1833 and 1835, 124 went down. By 1875, 46% of the 2,900 coastal casualties were on the east coast coal route.

Just to point out that Thompson was a very common name in County Durham. In the 1881 census there were 9,213 (the third highest county). Based on Poor Law Unions Sunderland had the highest number in the country at 1,831, and South Shields had 1,022

Stan, my apologies. In my earlier posts, I had meant to thank you for the pertinence of these quotes from you, and to address Julian's original question "What happened to the family money?"

These Thompsons, according to family lore were originally Camerons, and, after the '45, some of them slipped across the border and adopted the name Thompson precisely because it was one of the most common surnames in the northeast.

As for money, shipowners have a lot in common with farmers and actors. A farmer is land-rich but cash-poor and his credit is only as good as his last crop. An actor is only as bankable as his last role. A shipowner apparently has position and credit, but that is all contingent on "when my ship comes in". Family lore talks of a collier which broke its back in the Tyne while?/immediately after? loading and of several other ships in succession "taken aback on the Goodwin Sands".

Also many thanks to Karen M. for all the details she's been posting about Annie Lee's collateral relatives. It all makes a little less for me to tell, tho' (grin) I'm still hoping that Julian's friend will fill in some of my gaps.

Thanks for this excellent Thompsons in Canada info.   I'm "awaiting instructions" from my pal, if he's keen to dig further on the Canada side, so if he does I'll post a new thread on the Canada Board.   Unless, of course, Westoe wants you to continue .......

But, I would be interested, now, in any info on the death of Joseph Logan Thompson.

As I said above, Westoe, I'm awaiting further instructions from my client 

I had little problem finding info about Enoch Donkerley or Dunkerley Thompson - a distinctive name - but I did struggle tying down Henry Lee and his father James.  Henry disappears into the ether after 1861 (where he was found, visiting, in London, with Anne and children in Westoe with her father ED Thompson) until what I think is his death in 1875 in South Shields?

Searching on James Lee or Henry Lee is not half as productive as for E D Thompson - for whom I found stuff in the London Gazette.

Actually Julian and Karen, Westoe already has all of this Canadian stuff (and much more - grin).  E.g. - William Snowdon Thompson's wife Mary Threkeld was known in the family as "Mary-Willie" to distinguish her from "Mary-Enoch", his brother's wife.

I'd like to give you details about Joseph Logan Thompson, but isn't it a two-way street???

Also a quick skim through pictures again turns up more - EDT, Mary Ann Logan, Harry Lee, Charles Havelock Lee,  Annie Mary Lee and W. H. Dickinson and babies Alice and Ethel etc. etc. etc.
