Julian,
I have been reading this post and I'm always interested in the responses, I thought I'd add my connection to your shipbuilders.
My connection is through my paternal grandmother, Kathleen Featherstonhaugh.
My connection through my grandmother is Richard Charles Thompson, born 15/08/1857 in Sunderland, he died in 1918. He was a shipbuilder, living in Belsize Park Gardens. Richard married Millicent Frances Featherstonhaugh. Richard was a partner of the Robert Thompson & Sons Yard.  I don't know if he is connected to Enoch Thompson in your first posting.
Regards, Alison

Thank you so much Stan for your prompt reply.
Yes, this is useful and I can investigate. My family, the Kidds and Smalls left in the 1870's and ended up in Utah. What a journey it must have been.

The Kidds came from Staffordshire Moorlands. Can the local papers of that time be accessed via the internet as I am in Lancashire?
Many thanks,
Patricia

Hi  Patricia,
Local Nineteenth Century Newspapers are available online, but unfortunately they are subscription sites available only to libraries and universities etc. Occasionally they have a free trial period for anyone, the last one was about three months ago and there will probably will be another in the future. It is worth checking to see if your local library subscribes. A lot of  libraries subscribe to "The Times" digital archive, but of course that is London based.

Thank you Stan.

I will contact my library. It is a shame we cannot get it on Ancestry.

Best Wishes,
Patricia

Hello Patricia,

The Lancashire County Public Library has those databases in their Online Reference Library. If you are a member, you can access them from your home computer.

Cheers,
Westoe

Hello Westoe,

Thank you.
I have had a little look. Will delve deeper.
Pity there are not any staffordshire papers on.
Best wishes,
