Soldiers in the 19th Century

Hi,
I have a James Snook who married a Sarah Brinkworth in Frome, Somerset on 12 Jan 1810.

His occupation was 'Soldier' and his daughter, Elizabeth was born in France in about 1811.

His wife was a widow by the time of the 1841 census and she was living back in Frome.

Does anyone know how i could find out any more information about James and his military career.

James Snook was married in 1810 in Frome, Somerset  to Sarah Brinkworth. His occupation was a Soldier and his daughter was born in 1811 in France.

Well, if his daughter was born in France in 1811, maybe he was a POW taken in the Peninsular. Some wives were allowed on campaign with their husbands.

I know some civilians travelled between France and Britain during the Napoleonic Wars, but basically they were interned.

Hi Paul,

I couldn't find any soldiers at all by the name of Snook on the Waterloo roll I'm afraid. And looking at your original post again (his wife was a widow by 1841), he's not going to appear on the MGS roll as the medals were only issued to survivors in 1847.

I did check the MGS roll anyway for other soldiers called Snook, just incase they might be related (possible lead?). There's one listed, as follows:

Private Thomas Snook, 4th Dragoons (bars for Talavera, Albuhera, Salamanca, Vittoria & Toulouse).
