Coogan / Cogan family of Cork
« on: Saturday 04 November 06 13:28 GMT (UK) »
I've just connected my family tree to the Coogans / Cogans from Cork, My great grandfather was born in Everton, England at the start of the 20th century, named John Joseph Coogan, he later changed his name to Duffy, I think in the late teens or early 1920s.
His parents travelled from Cork to Everton, in the late 19th century.
One story in the family is that John Joseph was a heavyweight boxer, and it goes that he wasn't allowed to fight under the name of Duffy, he had to use Coogan.
Does anyone have information on the coogan family from that area of Ireland, apparently there are still alot about, and all are related??
I'd love to be able to go back further with this line, but after the troubles began in ireland, the family divided and no-one now knows anything about our ancestors.
I look forward to any advice, and I hope there is a coogan out there that can help.
Cheers, Benn.

HI Benn,
I not sure what I can add to what you are looking for, but my 4 x great grandfather Edward Cogan was from Cork but I nothing more than that they all linked to the family of Milo De Cogan who was the town of Cogan in Wales. I am also aware of a Richard Cogan who to was from Cork living in Hastings but I have yet to prove his connection to the family. It was worth looking up Milo because it gives a background history on the family, this could prove more to you than it has me, due to the loss of records in 1922 I have found it difficult to find much on my part of the family.

Hi Benn I dont know if you are still active for this post.  I suggest you start with Baptism/Marriage records available at www.registers.nli.ie  The Cogan name was prevalent in Carrigaline Co Cork & their records start in 1826 to 1880
www.nationalarchives.ie has Tithe Applotment & Griffith Valuation & Census records.
If Edward married I suggest you acquire his marriage Cert as this should state his fathers name, which would be a good starting point before you search the church registers for a baptism.

Hi ballydw,
Thank you for the reply with concern to Edward Cogan, I have marriage for him here in London. However, church records in the 1820's did not ask for fathers information, this is what has stumped me. I will look at the to web addresses and see if this leads me further in my research, again thank you and I hope that it help's Benn to.

Hi Little Annie,
sorry for the late reply but I wanted to find name variants that I hope will be of help, I will list them in the order I have them: Cogan, Cogen, Cogon, Coogan, Coogen, Coogin, Coggan, Coggen, Coggin, Coggins, Goggin and Goggins. Goggins is connected to an off branch of the family in Cork who were Lord of the Manor for Bampton in Devonshire, I cannot say at what point they became Goggins but it is said that this part remained in England.
