Hi,

I am currently tracing the Braby side of my family in Brighton.  We believe the family originated from West Sussex - Amberley.  My GGG Grandfather William Braby b. 1787 was married in Singleton in 1822 so we feel that we may well descend from Amberley.  He was a Poulterer by traden and I have since found out that he had a 'pitch' in Market Place, Brighton.

I have managed to ascertain quite alot about the Braby's in Brighton and we have come across of a very interesting series of events!    This family tree is very personnal to me as I was a Braby before I married and I have often wondered where the family and name came from.

Hi Fosbeck,
I'm sure you know there was a huge clan of Braby's in Amberley, Sx.  My research seems to indicate that at least one BRABY re-located from Amberley to the Horsham area.  I have one that I have identified, a ROBERT BRABY (possibly the son of Thomas & Mary nee Kent) who married a Sarah Jenkins 1777 Rudgwick Sx.  My own line of inquiry is revealing that the original name from the Horsham area was BRABY (and its many variants) which changes into the name of BRAVERY at varying times from the mid-1700s to late 1700s.  I have found many that are born as BRABY, but marry & die as BRAVERY.  It would seem that this was not a deliberate change on the part of family members for sinister reasons, more like errors in the parish records (hard of hearing parish clerks)  As for the Brighton area, there is a strong contingent of both Bravery's & Braby's to this day.  The Bravery line seems to me to have started with a HENRY Bravery marrying a Philadelphia Winter, 1832, Brighton.  As yet I have not identified his parents or their place of origin but it could well be his father started out in life as a BRABY from W. Sussex
Would love to stay in touch & discuss this further,
Jane

Hi Jane,

Thanks for your response...

We believe that my GGG Grandfather William Braby b 1787 is a son of: Robert Braby & Sarah Jenkins.  However, until I get to the West Sussex records office I cannot be totally sure - I need to try and get his baptism record to confirm parents & place of residence.

William Braby married Anne Upstell from Singleton in 1822 but I have a feeling that this William had a previous wife - Hester or Ester as William would have been 35yrs old when he married Anne Upstell which was rather old in those days for a first marriage.

As I have already said, William was a Master Poulterer and ended up in Brighton.  He & Anne have 3 children that I know about:

George Braby
James   Braby (my GG Grandfather) m. Emily Augusta Smith
Ruth     Braby

It is so frustrating not being about to confirm if William comes from Amberley and that his parents were: Sarah Jenkins & Robert Braby.  I have now joined the Sussex Family History Group in the hope of laying my hands on more information that will help me with my search.

Have you come across this William Braby?

Kind regards

Fosbeck

Hi Fosbeck,
I haven't forgotten you. I don't think I can add too much to my last email.  I had William BRABY (1787) on my notes as the son of Robert & Sarah Jenkins who married in Rudgwick 1777.  Robert, being the son of Thomas & Mary Kent.  I think I got that information from a pedigree resource on Family Search.  My interest being that I was trying to find a male BRABY who settled in the Horsham area (Rudgwick is near Horsham) & Amberley seemed to be the largest concentration of the BRABY name, thinking that this might shed light on my own line of descent which starts with the BRABY name in that area.  The name changing to BRAVERY in later years.
I've just received some fiche from Surrey & noted that the name BRABY is listed in the index alongside, BRABY & BREFERY, so you might like to bear that in mind.  Another piece of information is that there appeared to be two generations of BRABY in ALFOLD Surrey, a HENRY & Elizabeth (BETTY) who had 7 children, the eldest being HENRY 1771.  The parents, Henry & Elizabeth do not appear to have been born in Alfold.  Henry, the son, marries a Mary and remains in Alfold, having 12 children.  After about 1818 (the burial of Mary wife of Henry junior) there doesn't seem to be anymore mention of BRABY or BRAVERY.
If I find anymore information I'll get in contact.  Likewise if you find anything, I would much appreciate hearing from you,
Jane

Jane,

Sorry I have not been able to get into my database due to an tech problem and also  I have been up in Iceland for the last few days.  I am so glad to back as it is much warmer here in the UK than up there!  No, I was not family tree researching up in Iceland although it would not surprise me if some Braby's went to the 'frozen North'.

As soon as I have managed to get back in to the database I will start my checks.
