Bob,

I researched this family for a lady some time ago to see if there was a connection with my mother who was born Margaret Keenan, in the event there wasn't but I seem to recall that Isaac Keenan was sometimes called Owen and Elizabeth, daughter of Owen Keenan and Catherine McCabe was born 27th November 1863 and baptised 25th December 1863 at St Joseph Catholic Church, Birtley sponsored by Thomas and Mary Coyle (I think Mary Coyle was a Keenan.) I will need to check my notes, but I believe that Catherine died about 1880 and Isaac remarried in 1885 and appears in the 1891 census as Kenny. By 1901 he was a widower again living with his brother John Keenan. I think the family originated fom near Newry, Co Armagh.

Good luck,
Mr Terence Arthur.

Bob

I have loads of information on the family, but to be going on with, here is Isaac's marriage from the register of St Joseph's Catholic Church, Gateshead.

15th February 1863:
Isaac Keenan of Blackfell son of John Keenan of Blackfell
to
Catherine McCabe of Usworth, daughter of Hugh McCabe of Usworth.
Witnessed by:
John Smith and Mary Ann Smith of Gateshead.

JTA.

I was thrilled to find out about my gg grandfather Isaac Keenan .Do you have any more info about the family. My Great grandmother was his daughter Catherine Ann who appears on the 1881 census as Ann but the family called her Catherine. She married Martin Duffy from Shincliffe Durham

The best person to speak to is Bob who started this thread and who has since comprehensively researched the family. I will try to contact him but you will need to post a couple more messages before I can send you a personal message.

no problem. I have been researching Isaac Keenan for a while but couldn't get any further. Is Bob or related or a researcher?  It would be very interesting to find out more especially for my Aunt who's granny was Catherine Ann.

Regard Angela

Yes, Bob is descended from the the same family of Keenans but it is so long since we corresponded on the subject I don't remember his exact line. I have emailed him but he works abroad a lot and now lives in Ireland.

Presumably for better job prospects Owen changed his name to Isaac and appears as Owen in the 1851 census living with his father and step mother who had just married the year before at St Patrick's Felling.

For your information this is the church marriage entry:

17 June 1850
John Keenan of Berry Edge, son of Owen Keenan and Cicily O'Hare of Newry.
to
Mary McCowey of Sheriff Hill daughter of Henry McCowey and Mary Morgan of Ardnaroy? Kilavy? (priest's phonetic rendering of what he heard).
witnessed by: Terence Flood of Newcastle and Ann Smyth of Gateshead.

I'm pretty sure we traced the McCoweys to the parish of Killevy, Co Armagh which abuts Newry and I know Bob has visited there.

Good luck,
J.T.A.
