Murphy - Newmarket, Cork
« on: Thursday 02 November 06 06:44 GMT (UK) »
Hello from Australia!

I have recently received a death certificate for a gr gr gr uncle, Richard Murphy, and in the section for birthplace is written near Newmarket. So I'm dipping my toes into the water using this information in the anticipation this lead might help find my Murphy family.

Patrick Murphy (b circa 1802) married Mary Mullins about 1826 as that is when their son, Richard is born (as per death certificate). Other children born in County Cork, Ireland were Mary, Ellen, Cornelius, Johanna, Patrick, Jeremiah and Timothy. The family emigrated in 1844.

Patrick's father was named Jeremiah, but I don't know the name of his mother.

How do I proceed to try to find information about this family?

I would appreciate help from Chatters to find my elusive Murphys.

Cheers

Elsie

You may wish to post on the Kiskeam. com site. There is a section for ancestry searches. Newmarket  and surrounding villages would be included on this site. Good Luck.

Inteersting!  My mother's family are from Newmarket, which is a lovely town, by the way, and my maternal Grandmother was a Nora Murphy, who would have been born in the 1880s.

Hello Ceallachain and Rose!

Murphy is such a common surname in Ireland! However as we are taking about the same area , Newcastle, maybe there is a connection between our families. It's a matter of finding that elusive link. Mmmmm.

Interesting to note that you have a Richard Murphy too, Rose. Speculation, of course, but could it be that there is a connection through that name of Richard- cousin, sibling, Grandparent?

When your Murphy family emigrated Rose, where did they settle in Australia? My Murphy family went to the Bendigo area in Victoria.

Hi to the Newmarket Murphys!!!!

My Murphys immigrated from the Newmarket area 1839....my Richard was born on the ship 4 days before it arrived in Australia.

My Murphys were in the Melbourne & Bendigo area also. William & Ellen Murphy (nee Reardon) had 5 children Richard b. 1839 ( cannot find a death...on a certificate says he died before 1874)  Mary Ellen b, 1848, Patrick George b. 1851, Catherine b. 1852 & William Charles b. 1857

Hello Elsie

I found your message yesterday when I came across Webchat.com and was very pleased to see it as I am a descendant of Patrick Murphy and Mary Mullins through their youngest son John William born in Melbourne and died in Bendigo.  He married Margaret Ellen Kennedy and after her death Selena Johns.

I would be very interested to be in touch to swap information on both our lines.   John William was my great grandfather.  I have not been able to find anything regarding their family in Ireland.

I am in touch with a couple of other Murphy descendants as well.

Cheers
