Hello Netta,

Welcome to Rootschat.

Anthony should be able to tell you which people called Shortt/Short were in Belfast
in 1819 by looking in his directory. Do you have any more details about the family?

All the Best, Chris

Thank you for your reply Christopher.
I have very little information about Robert Short/Shortt 1825c other than he was a highly religious Brethren we think. My cousin thinks there might be a Tyrone connection, I dont think so myself but one can never be certain.
It will take me a while working out the site but will keep trying.
Let me know what type of information might help.
I would'nt mind a look at Anthony's street directory.
thank you again
Regards Jeanetta

Hiya Jeanetta,

Although your profile does not give me your location I feel it's too much of a coincidence to meet a couple of Jeanettas in the space of a couple of days. I think we have a mutual acquaintance who works in the "Age Concern" shop. If I'm right we have access to the same library and local Library Board HQ. If you have not already done so it might be an idea to contact the Librarian in the Irish section at the HQ .. she's very helpful .. in fact all the staff there are very good. I've referred them to a couple of people and they both sent me messages telling me how impressed they were with the speed at which a reply was sent to them.

Do you mean Robert was an Evangelist as opposed to a Presbyterian minister? Have you looked a W. D. Killen's "History of congregations of the Presbyterian church in Ireland" in the reference section of the library? It does not have an index but the names of the ministers are in bold letters.

Chris

Hi Christopher,
Believe me there is only one Jeanetta, and Jim at age concern is our connection.
Robert Short/Shortt was Brethren not Presbyterian, but I'm sure there would be no records available as they were/are a very closed community.
Would his two sons be a better way for me to go then work backwards ? can I post more than one search.
I find the site awesome, probably too difficult for me but i will keep trying.
Jeanetta .

Hiya Jeanetta,

I keep getting American websites for Brethren. Were they Plymouth Brethren?
I presume they worship in Churches. Do you know anything more about them?

Chris

Hi Chris, Plymouth Brethren was mentioned during family talks, but always vague.
As far as the building type they all seem to be small halls rather than churches.
Sorry I cant help any further. I don't know of any central H/Q, as I said all seems very closed, the trick would be finding a Brethren nowadays.
Regards Jeanetta.

The Brethren / Plymouth Brethren started in Dublin in the 1820s Wikipedia has an aticle about the Gospel Hall Brethren which was different to the Plymouth Brethren. http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/economics/article687986.ece
