Hi mvy,

I'm relatively new here too, and still learning, but might I suggest that you ask specific questions on the related boards eg Scotland board for questions about Scotland, Wiltshire board for Wiltshire questions etc. You'll probalby find you get more help that way.

One more thing, one piece of the information you gave didn't seem right. I am in Australia so not that knowledgable about English geography .... but, if I'm reading this correctly, are you saying that your Batchelors are from Portsea in Wiltshire? I don't think Portsea is in Wiltshire - it's down on the south coast. Unless there is another Portsea of course?

Hope someone may be able to confirm this.

Have fun on rootschat - everyone agrees that it is addictive.

Hi Ruskie,
The info i have is that my Batchelors are from Portsea Whiltshire England. It has not yet been 100% verified that they came from there. I do not have any idea where it is exactly. I am reading your response and are you asking if it is the Portsea in England or Australia? I havent had time to yet check it out thoroughly.

Hi again mvy,

Sorry I may not have been clear. Wiltshire is a county in England and I think Portsea is a town in Hampshire.

So, saying that your ancestors are from Portsea, Wiltshire would be like you saying you are from Sydney, Victoria.

I'll have a look and see if I can find anything about your Batchelors.

Are you familiar with www.freebmd.org and www.familysearch.org. These are good free sites where you can have hours of fun searching for ancestors.

Hi,

I've just checked in Parloc - the parish locator and the only Portsea that they have is in Hampshire.  Theres a Poulshot and a Potterne and a Porton in Wiltshire?  You may need to check the source as some one may have not understood what was said and written what they heard.

Good luck

Hi,

Just looking at that Familysearch record they talk about St Mary's Portsea.  There is a parish of St Mary's in Portsea but not in Wiltshire in Hampshire.  You might want to post to the Hampshire board to see if someone can do a look up of parish records in St Mary's Portsea for a christening on the 2 Sep 1821 for your John Henry Bachelor to see if the submitter just got the county wrong.

Good luck.

Hi Jenny,
I just looked up the St Mary's one and the details are almost the same as what i have for the Portsea, Whiltshire lookup. The only difference is the parents for John Henry. Even his wifes 2nd marriage is the same. I am really confused now. ???
As i am going away for a few days I will have to wait before I can look into it any further.
Many Many thanks for looking this up for me and hopefully setting me on the right track. Time will eventually tell.
Margaret ;)
Just to show how confused i am his parents are the same name. The submitter of this file has also submitted another file that is slightly different. I think I may have to snail mail them and find out whats happenening! ??? ??? doubly confused.
