McCloy is alive and well and still in Glasgow
« on: Sunday 29 October 06 00:41 BST (UK) »
Hi
the McCloy's of Glasgow came into my family in 1866 when my G.Grandfather George married Jane McCloy.I Have the McCloys going back to 1792. to around 1930's all over Scotland. In all the time i have had the tree i have only ever found one person researching The McCloys.I thought the family must have died out or emigrated. So I was amazed today to find via the phone books for Scotland. That there are still lots of McCloys in East Kilbride, where my G.G.Grandfather Richard McCloy was born in 1810. There are some in the bridge of Wier,Renfrewshire, plus other places my ancestors came from. I know they spread out all over Scotland. The thing is i would like to write to some of these people  but i think i have tried doing this before and never got any replies.Even though i sent a S.A.E,So i was wondering if it might be best to put a letter of some sort in a paper in Glasgow. Then people might feel less pressurized to reply.I think half the McCloys I Scotland will be descendent's  of Alexander McCloy My G.G.G.Grandfather. Any thought on this as what would be best, would be appreciated

Hi Celia.

I have been in the same situation as you with my Herbert's, I wrote to some people to i thought could possibly be relations. I never got any response so I sent a letter into the Wirral Globe, which was printed into there Globebox section( if you want to read my letter here's the link: Wirral Globe  )I had a great response from putting the letter. i think it was about a week after my letter was printed i got a letter from the editor of the Wirral Globe. I got in contact with two relatives via the Wirral Globe, one of them is the oldest member of my family at the age of 86.I also got information from a lady who lived in Heswall and she gave me information about my family's business , the Herbert's Dairy.

I think it is worth a try putting a letter in a newspaper in the Glasgow area.

I hope this is of some help.

Marc ;D

Hi Marc
yes we get the wirral Globe thats what gave me the idea i often read requests in it. What happens is that you send you reply to the editor and he/she sends them to you.I do think people love to reply to a newspaper rather than direct. It's like there thinking they are not really writing to the person because they send it to the paper, one of those Strange But Tue things. ;D I bet the people you previously wrote to were a bit surprised to see your add and that you got replies ;) Right i will try my luck.

Hi Celia.

I see the moderator has tweaked the URL so hopefully the link should work if not go on the Wirral Globes website and in the serch engine type in " bid to solve grave mystery"  it should come up with a few articles, mine should be the one at the top.Hope that helps.

Good Luck!!! I hope you get lots of replies.

Hi Celia,

You may want to try the East Kilbride News.  Local newspapers are very popular in Scotland.
Email:  eknews[AT]s-un.co.uk

Their address is, 2 Olympia Arcade, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, G74 1LX

Good luck,

Anne

I found the Scotland resources last night,in all the times i have used the Scotland boards i have never seen the resources board before. It is usually at the top this one is on the bottom,i only found it by chance.Anyway i found a very good link to Scotlands Newspapers,I wanted to start in E.Kilbride so i found that paper.I did type a message out asking how i put arequest in the paper. But when i went to send i got a message the mail site was unavailable. So i will try that again. As I have just mention on another post it wasn't my day yesterday ;D ;D
