Burke- Hollymount,Co Mayo
« on: Saturday 28 October 06 06:55 BST (UK) »
Hi I'm new!  I've been on here all night reading all the messages! What a Great site!
I was hopeing someone could help me! I've been stuck on this for so long!
My Great Grandfather Patrick Burke lived in Frenchgrove,Hollymount in Co. Mayo. (Frenchgrove, Mayo Kilmaine Kilcommon Ballinrobe Connaught)  I'm trying to find out his Mother and siblings. His father was Thomas Burke
He was married twice. 1st to Bridget Feerick?  2nd to Eleanor(Ellen) Fearock(Feerick).  They were married in 1872. He was 29yrs old, a widower and a herder.   I was told by the Mayo History Center Patrick's 1st wife was Ellen's Sister.  They had 2 sons (and 1 daughter I think) Bridget I assume died after having 2nd son Tom in 1871.
On Ellen & Patrick's marriage certificate her father is listed as Michael, a landowner. She was from Cahernablauhy, Mayo Kilmaine Ballinrobe Ballinrobe Connaught. Her Mother was Mary Mullins, supposedly!
Any info on Patrick Burke would be greatly appreciated, especially his birth info!
And any info on Ellen & Bridget would be a nice bonus!

Thanks!
Patty

Hi Patty and welcome to Rootschat.
I have been 'googling' the info you have posted here and most references found stem from yourself - so it is proving, as you are finding, to be difficult!
I note that some of your info is posted here:

http://www.rootschat.com/links/02v4/

Moderator Comment: Long Link Shrunk using http://www.rootschat.com/links/

which has quite a bit about the Feerick connection.
The only thing at the moment I can think of is to get the birth certificate of Tom, 1871 from Irish records which would hopefully give your greatgrandfather's first wife. You would think that the Mayo Family History Centre would have supplied the details in a comprehensive search.
This of course is not really what you want I know. I suppose you have also tried Parish records- often not very good and again the official reocrd office would have had access to these.
http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/mayo/kilcommon.htm shows some Burke/ Bourke in the area and Feerack in Frenchgrove.
I am sorry I am not much help here and wish you good luck in your research.
By the way, I think I read somewhere that you have your family in 1901 census- I cannot bring the 1901 Leitrim Roscommon site up at the moment to check but I recently got info from the Land Registration which gave details of a site from Griffiths Valuation onwards- again I think I just 'googled' the address of Land Registry. It was not expensive and helped me.
best wishes
heywood

Hi Heywood!
Thank you so much for your reply! You see my problem!! I think I am the only person searching for this Burke/Feerick family!  I don't think anyone has even heard of Frenchgrove, Hollymount!!
You know the sad thing is I still have family that lives there and they still have the house my Grandfather was born in!  Unfortunately, they aren't into the family thing! I wish they had email, maybe I could persuade them into helping me!
The info on Maggie's site on my Feerick's actually came from me!
I had chatted with her along time ago and filled her in on my Feerick's.  I also gave a relative of mine,Jim, her website and he shared his Feerick info along with mine too!  He and I are trying to prove how we are connected!
This family stuff is so frustrating! Anyway, I really appreciate your help!
Hope to chat with you again soon!
Patty :)

Hello Patty,

What denomination were the Burke and Feerick families? Were they members of the Catholic faith, the Established Church (Anglicans or Church of Ireland), Methodists or members of the Presbyterian Church?

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

Bridget, Shantallow, Kilcommon

There are two Feerick queries on RootsWeb ...  A Galway family and a Mayo family www.rootsweb.com/~fianna/surname/sur06.html

Hi Cyril!

I would love to share what I have and hear what you have on the Burke & Feerick families! I also have Walsh in my family! I have a copy of my GGrandparents marriage certificate. They were Patrick Burke & Eleanor Fearock. His father was Thomas Burke (herdsman)and hers was Michael Fearock(landowner). They were married in 1972. It was his 2nd marriage and her 1st. I think he was married to her sister and she must have passed away and then he married Ellen to take care of the children he already had.
I'm stuck on Patrick! I don't know his mother or other siblings  names!
I look forward to hearing from you again!
Patty

hello again patty,
at the moment i cannot connect the bourke burke walsh connection, or the walsh feerick connection.
i remember my dad telling me that he was related to a jim burke, and also a michael joe feerick.
one thing that i noticed that is very common to all these families is they were all great accordian players.
in fact there is a photo of a showband with four of my cousins in it.
i dont know if that is of any help to you.
best wishes,
cyril

Hi Patty,
I have relatives named Burke who are from Kilmaine and Hollymount,
I have not researched as far back as this so far,
however, my Burke family are related to the Sullivan's of Kilmaine; does this match yours at all?
