That's the only suitable one I could find too, John Goss aged 85  2nd Quarter Williton 5c 180

on www.genuki.org if you enter Brompton Regis in the search engine, there's a link to parish transcriptions for B. Regis, found a baptism for John Goss 8th July 1821 parents Robert & Martha

Nothing! Ancestry is not complete.

Ancestry does have the complete index images 1837-1983.

Hi Barbara - I have found folks in books written by other family members who are not documented correctly. If you do not have a source given for the information, you cannot assume it is correct - which is the reason for searching the indexes in the first place. Thus said, there are also known to be many errors in the indexes.

My understanding from other postings on RC (being in Australia, I have no first hand knowledge), the local registry offices may find folks who can't be found in the GRO indexes.

Have you found either of the folks on the 1901 census? This may assist to verify their ages.

Unless they've made recent additions, I'm afraid they don't.  I know for a fact some of the Gs for the mid 1920s were missing...they claimed they were there, but they had missed pages out (it jumped from page 24 to 27 [or something like that], for example...completely misisng out my surname).
Currently engaging in a one-name study of the Twyman surname.

Golding, Twyman, Kennard, Wales (Kent).
Berks, Challinor (Staffordshire).
Wakely. (Glam & Monmouth).

I stand corrected - I had forgotten some pages had been said to be missing by other Rc folks. Despite the bad indexing, I haven't come across any missing pages as yet.

Twice this week I've found the people I'm looking for, clicked on the '.' to find completely the wrong folio so unable to view the right family, tried scrolling through other districts to find the right folio without success and takes too long.  This was for 1901, could pay I suppose to see the image on www.1901census but I have this so-called 'deluxe' subscription to ancestry and don't feel like paying more to another site, so it's very annoying - needless to say I emailed them about it but so far no reply - am I surprised??  ::)

Thanks to all who are trying to help me.  I dont think the John Goss who died at Williton is the same one, I will keep an open mind until I can find my street map of Somerset.  They didnt travel far and I havent got any connections to Williton but you never know.

Half the fun of finding relatives is the searching and the eureka moment.

Regards and many thanks

Keep an open mind, csh! Never 'assume' what ancestors did, always find the facts!

The John Goss that has been found looks a very likely candidate. Unless there were any other John Goss's around of the same age he MUST be the one!!
(where was your John Goss in 1901 census?are there any Goss rellies in Williton in 1901?)

Same with the Wensley - dont assume because his grandson said he died in 1921 that he did, unless grandson has the death cert to prove it. Grandson may not have been alive then and is probably relying on the memory of another relly. So - keep looking!

John Goss was living with his brother Robert Goss in Brompton Regis in the 1901 census.

I tried the variation of Goss which is Goff but nothing yet.

I will do a check of Williton next but none is there to my knowledge.

Regards and many thanks
