Ancestry BMD

I have been searching Ancestry's BMD researching deaths registration.  My GT GT Grandfather is all of 185 years old now as I cant find any trace of his death.  So I had another go on a name and date of another person who I knew what year he was born and the year he died.  No trace.
What am I doing wrong?  I dont want to buy certificates as its only tying up ends and would anyone be able to find the dates if I cant.

Nothing! Ancestry is not complete. Try FreeBMD, as a start (though also incomplete). There are other (pay to view) options, too.

How have you searched? Only the indexed database, or have you viewed the actual images of deaths quarter by quarter and year by year?

Give us the name and I'll have a look!

Remeber as Tati says, to look through the COMPLETE indexes quarter by quarter, rather than the partial ones on the database.

ANd also remember that ANcestry's indexing leaves a lot to be desired. Always remember you are looking for an alphabetical list, so there will always be a page where the name you are looking for will be alphabetically (unless very rarely by chance it does occur exactly at a page break), so dont believe it when it comes back with an apparent 'missing' quarter or 'no match'
The best way to get round this is to try a name nearby yours in the alphabet, and then use the green arrows at the top of the sheet to move to the correct page.

But I will willingly have a look for you. Or if you want me to find the one that you are definite about then tell me that one, and maybe I can find where the hitch is!!!!
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex

Thanks for your replies.  I will have a look at Free BMD and see what comes up.  I have been going to the alphabetical indexes and quarters. I will keep looking.

FreeBMD and ancestry lists are the same as thats where ancestry get it from.

Ancestry do have the complete images whereas freeBMD don't.

And another REALLY clever thing that Ancestry has done... ???
When indexing the pages they have put the first name on a page correctly (...well most of the time) but if there is a handwritten addition to the listing at the bottom of the page then they treat that addition as the last name on the page.

I went onto Free BMD earlier.  No joy. I now throw this open to anyone that can help.

John Goss Born Brompton Regis, Somerset in 1821.

I tried with another  James Wensley, born 1831 died 1921 again all in Somerset, but he lived all his life within Harford Village and thereabouts, and although there are deaths of James Wensley in Wellington and another (memory gone) the ages are wrong.  This is correct as it printed in a book written by his grandson.  I have tried 1920 and 1922. Nothing.

I have found a John Goss born about 1822 died 1907 in Willinton, Somerset.  Would that be him by any chance?
