Kiwi

Desk space booked, Laptop socket ordered, Burtenshaw papers requested (am told that they will be available)  so all looks OK for Thursday.
Exactly what information are you looking for from those documents? as I dont want to write down everything and then find you did not require it

It seems like I will have a busy day with 22 queries to look up and try to answer

Fingers crossed

Hi Chris,

I'm trying to put 'meat on the bones'  for John Stace who was a wheelwright in Berwick village.  He left with all his family in 1850, but I see from the Burtenshaw papers (p116.)that the wheelwrights shop was up for sale again in 1853 (late White) so am hoping for a description of the shop, house ,implements etc, as John did not seem to bring anything along those lines to NZ, he never practiced the business of the wheelwright professionally in NZ.  I imagine he sold the business as a going concern, lock, stock and barrell as it appears to have been done again in 1853.

The other reference (page 211) is for 1851 farming stock, dead and alive. The dead stock will refer to farm implements ( not animals!) This refers I think to one of Johns brother who remained in the UK, so anything descripitive would be interesting.

There might not be much there, but I hope so, and hope it will be interesting for you, not too boring, as you have been kind enough to look for me.

Regards,
kiwi

Hi there

Have just returned safely from my stint at the East Sussex Record Office.

Arrived there at 10.00am this morning and slowly worked myway through the 22 lookup requests by which time it was 4.00 - yep, I had not left the research room for any reason neither for food, drink or the toilet.  You get far to absorbed in what you are doing.

So I am now going to have a drink and my evening meal before I start posting the replies to your queries.

Watch this space this evening.

Hi there Kiwi

I spent some considerable time looking at the notebooks you quoted; they were absolutely absorbing and full of information concerning your ancestors possessions - if I was you, I would contact the East Sussex Record Office to get them to do a full and proper transcription of the 28 pages - it would be well worth it.

Here is just a flavour of the contents, I would not have had the time to transcribe them all.

Auction Note Book Bur/2/1/10 – Page 211 - 238
An Auction of Mr John Stace, Stock, Sackling & Furniture Sale at Berwick on 22nd May 1851

The contents of the notebooks are arranged as follows:
Left hand side - Sale goods,
Right hand side - Purchaser and price paid.

Mostly written in pencil, but some pages are in pen

Here is just a quick sample of each section:-

Main Entries
(8 pages, 71 items) including
Ladder - 10/- by Pennington
Wheelbarrow - 19/- by Dadswell
Butchers Blocks - 6/6d by Shoesmith
Sussex Wheel Plough - £2/10/- by Martin
Total of Impliments was £61.6.0

Live Stock
(1 page, 12 items) including
Alderny Cow named 'Daisy' – £11/10/- by Weller
Half Bred Cow named 'Cherry' – £6/12- by Cooper
Alderny Cow named 'Lemon' – £12/-/- by Saxby
Half Breed , named 'Peggy' - £10/10/- by Mellor
Aldeny Cow, named 'Strawberry' - £7/-/-
Alderny Cow named 'Beauty', £11/10/- by Shoesmith
Powerful cart horse of 10yrs,   £5/5/-
Useful Half Bred Mare of 7 yrs, £9/-/-
Total was £94/14/-

Furniture Downstair
(10 pages, 93 items) including
Fireguard 3/6
Table 4/-
Sundries 3/6
2 milk Pails 7/-
Copper Furnaces 18/-
Dining Table 3/6
Round Tea Table 19/-
Shovel Tongs Fire Irons 1/6
Total £36/-/-

Furniture Upstairs
(6 pages, 38 items) including
Commode 6/6
Brussells Carpet £1/-/-
Bed Sheets 7/6
Mattress 11/-
Bed Head £1/-/-
Books 2/6
Total £35/-/-

Total of Household Goods came to £71/2/6d

Total of sale was £61 .   6 . 0d
                            £94 . 14 . 0d
                            £71 .   2 . 6d

Grand Total therefore was  £227 . 2 . 6d

If you want an explanation on monetary values, please let know - but that equates to about Ten Thousand pounds at todays values as £1 in 1852 equalled £41 in 1996 (How much is that worth? by Lionel Munby, printed by Phillimore in 1996)

Hope that helps you put 'flesh on their bones'

Hi Chris

Further to my post on the Lookup requests thread, could you see if they have any Brighton Directories for 1861 to 1864 for Thomas Roberts at either West Hill Street or Viaduct Terrace. I did look at that 1866 one on the Historical Directories website but he wasnt at those addresses but would be very grateful if you could look him up on those years I mentioned please.

Hi Ben

The earliest directory on the shelf was an 1867 Post Office Directory.
I did look in it though and :

Viaduct Terrace off London Road only 2 residents listed
William Knight, gardener at 12 and Mrs Rebecca Stevenson , lodging house at 21
West Hill Street, between Buckingham street and Clifton Road – no one by the name Roberts was listed.

Sorry to come back with such a negative response
