Hi Chris

How are you, mate?   It's a while since we met up down in Hastings and I haven't used the Sussex boards much since then because much of my family history research has been recently concentrated on my Staffordshire ancestors.

Thanks for your kind offer to do look ups at ESRO

I hope that you can help me to sort a few problems  identified with my Sussex ancestors.

1. I am looking for the baptism of Mary Gutsell. Probably this took place between 1748 and 1758 at Sedlescombe but could have occurred at Brede or Ewhurst.

2. I have somehow got two baptisms for James Manser Thorpe.  The first is a private baptism at Fairlight on 09 May 1824 and the second is also at Fairlight on 18 September 1831 (James's parents are William amd Ruth).  I think that the first baptism is correct since it corresponds with the months following the birth. Who was baptised at Fairlight on  18 September 1831?

3. James Manser married Harriet Wilson in 1846 and I have two daughters both called Alice.  The first is called Alice Louise is thought to be born at Fairlight about March 1863. The second is Alice Matilda baptised at Fairlight 23 August 1868. Are these both their children?  If so presumably the first one died young so is their a burial?

I hope that you can help.

Thanks in advance.

Chris - what a very generous offer.

If it's at all possible, I'd be most grateful for any information on a school run by a Frenchman named Henri Etienne Janson (b. abt 1801, died 1878) in Hove from at least 1851, possibly earlier, until the 1870s.  I'd be interested in the name of the school (if any), dates, numbers of pupils or indeed anything else about Professor Janson and his school.  Census details show that he and his family were at the following addresses in Hove:

1851:   9 Adelaide Crescent
1861: 106 Lansdowne Place
1871: 65 Hova Villas

There were boy boarders with the family at these addresses, but I haven't been able to find out whether the school was based at the successive Janson family homes or whether they simply accommodated a few of the boarders.

Prof. Janson's wife was a relative of mine, and many members of the family (including my great-great-grandfather) were educated at this school.

Many thanks in advance

Anna

Hi Chris,
Not sure if Mountfield is East Sussex but if it is I am looking for fir the birth details of William Butchers born abt 1825 (and any siblings).
I have his marriage cert and his father was William Butchers.
He is not with his parents in 1841 census and the only other William that could be his father is with wife Ann.  Would love to link these up.  Thank you for your time and effort.

Hi Chris,

Could you possibly confirm a baptism for a Stephen Catt in Ewhurst about 1629 please. Also, and I am not sure what early registers are available for Ewhurst, whether there are any Catt/Catte burials in this parish between about 1610 and 1630? I hope that this is not too much to ask, but I would be very grateful for your help.

Best wishes,
Lesley
