Visit to East Sussex Record Office - November 23 2006
« on: Friday 27 October 06 14:43 BST (UK) »
Hi to all Sussex Researchers

I will be spending a day at the East Sussex Record Office in the Maltings, Lewes,  on Thursday 23rd November especially to look up Rootschatters queries.  (I personally do not have any ancestors in Sussex)

If there is anything I can look up for you, please post the details on this thread.

I would prefer Parish Register entries, Sussex Directory enquiries, Monumental Inscriptions, etc, because I am not booking a film or fiche reader, so will not be able to look at filmed archives.

Looking forward to having a busy day

Hi Chris,

I would like to take advantage of your offer again to look in the Sussex Record Office if you can manage it.

You tried once before but the papers I'm after are kept off site and they require about 10 days advance notice to get them in to view. I understand from this they are acutal papers, not films. Any chance this time?

"Archive of Burtenshaw and Son of Hailsham, Auctioneers and Valuers"
Catalogue ref : BUR
Administrative Records
Auction and valuation books - ref, BUR/2/1
File - Auction Book - ref.BUR/2/1/10 date Nov 1850-Sep1851
page211. Berwick:farming live and dead stock (Stace) 1851

also

in the same catalogue
File - Auction Book - ref BUR2/1/19 date Dec 1852 Jun 1853
page116, Berwick, Blacksmith's Shop: wheelwright's and blacksmith's shops (late White) 1853

I don't imagine there will be much to each one, and hopefully it would not be too time consuming.  You have been a tremdous help in the past and I do appreciate your willingness to search.

Best regards,
kiwi.

Hi Kiwi

Yes, this time I will book them well in advance to make sure they are on site on the day of my visit.

Please do not be afraid to give me a friendly nudge, say 14 days prior to my visit, just to make sure I have booked them

Hi Chris

Further to my post on the Lookup requests thread, could you see if they have any Brighton Directories for 1861 to 1864 for Thomas Roberts at either West Hill Street or Viaduct Terrace. I did look at that 1866 one on the Historical Directories website but he wasnt at those addresses but would be very grateful if you could look him up on those years I mentioned please.

Thanks

Ben

Hi Ben

Have just printed off your enquiry and added it to my ESRO folder for 23rd Nov.

Will see if I can find any directories for 1861 / 1864.

Other than that, will see if there are any electoral registers for the same period

Hi Chris

Many thanks for your kind offer!

Two requests if I may....

RG 4/2620
Mayfield (Wesleyan Circuit) Baptisms
1808-1825

RG 4/2219
Mayfield (Calvinist) Baptisms
1767-1835

The original documents are of course held at TNA. If ESRO have microfilm copies could you see there's an entry for a James Blackman c1815 (+/- 2 years). I'm hoping that the parents are John and Sarah Blackman. (If there's an index, I'd be grateful for any other Blackman names from around 1808 to 1818.)

The second request is a little imprecise...

I have the birth cert for a James Blackman (aka James Russell) who was born in the Mayfield Almshouse on 13 January 1840. He was the illegit. son of the above James Blackman and Philadelphia Russell. (Baptised at St Dunstans on 15 March 1840 under his mother's maiden name.) In view of his birthplace and his illegitimacy, I'd be interested in any other relevant records - eg. Philadelphia's admission to the Almshouse or any maintenance order granted against James snr. Sorry this is a bit vague, but I'm not sure what sort of records exist.

Thanks in advance,

Dave

Hi Chris

I have a few requests for the one family I hope this isn't too much.

Birth's -  Children of Thomas BLUNDELL & Elizabeth Turley

William BLUNDELL c Jun 1820 Salehurst/Bodiam
Thomas BLUNDELL c Jun 1824 Salehurst/Bodiam
Henry BLUNDELL c 1826 Salehurst/Bodiam

Birth Elizabeth TURLEY c 1801, Father George TURLEY

       Birth Elizabeth BEANEY c 1758

Death Stephen BLUNDELL after 1838 ( Son Thomas's immigration records in 1838 state father Stephen BLUNDELL living in Bodiam, he would have been about 83 yrs at this time, but is not recorded in 1841 census so death probably between 1838 - 1841)

Death Elizabeth BLUNDELL ( Thomas's mother not named on his immigration records so died before 1838, not to be confused with the death of Thomas's wife Elizabeth in Dec 1834)

Marriage William BLUNDELL to Rachel ? before July 1755

This family seemed to remain around the Salehurst/ Bodiam areas.

I hope this isn't too much

I would appreciate anything you can find

Hi Chris
You have already looked for  this marriage for me in the sussex marriage index, with no luck.
Francis Baseby of Brede to Mary ?? of Catsfield around 1809ish
Would there be any chance of a quick look in the Catsfield parish registers for banns, since Mary was born there? slim chance,I know.
Thanks
Barbara
