Hi Clara

Just been on to FreeBMD and found the following

Births Dec Quarter 1872
~~~~~~~~
BOYS  Albert George     Lewes  2b 172
Will see if I can locate the exact place under the Lewes Reg dist - no, it still says Lewes; but that covers Alciston as well.
Perhaps they were non conformist, or perhaps they never baptized their children.   Was he the first born, did mum go home to her mum for the baby and possible baptism?
I notice from the 1881 census Albert is listed as Grandson of Elizabeth Stephens, that has got to be on his mothers side, it cant be his grandmother on his fathers side because she would be a BOYS as well.
Sorry, just thinking out aloud
Much appreciated your offer Chris.
could you possibly look for the following.
Jane Barnes was born in Bexhill c.1807 and she married John Dann 6/12/1839 in Brede
Jane had one son illegitimately, Samuel John Barnes c.1835 Brede and then another after marriage, Elias Dann c.1842 in Brede (baptised 25/9/1842, Brede)
I'm really looking for a baptism of Samuel and possibly a baptism of Jane to find her parents names?
Hi there David
No baptism in Bexhill between 1803 and 1810 for Barnes surname
May 22nd 1835, Samuel John Barnes, son of John & Jane, Labourer
Sept 25th 1842, Elias, son of John & Jane, Labourer
Surprising, but thats what the transcript of the Brede registers said
Hope it helps
Chris in 1066
Would you believe it, your search has thrown up unexpected info, now i'm going to have to review all that i've found so far to understand why Elias hasn't the surname Dann! Many thanks for time and effort it is greatly appreciated!
Hi Chris,
Yes of course you may use the info on your website when I have the full transcript, I thought it was interesting too! I smiled at Shoosmith buying an expensive cow named 'Beauty' and a butchers block, I'm sure there is no connection between the two, other than perhaps a 'good buy'!
No doubt he bought other things that will come to light in the full transcript.
I have two questions of a general nature that I hope you may be able to answer.
In An Auction of Mr John Stace, Stock, Sackling and Furniture Sale etc. etc
What is Sackling?  Is it an East Sussex colloquialism for ?
Also in your second reply, the estate is a Dwelling house in 2 tenements  the picture that comes to mind is of a Victorian terrace type house but that is wrong in a village setting, any ideas on what it might have looked like?
I thought it would have been single storied, but the furniture came from upstairs and downstairs.
Presumably the blacksmith lived in one bit the wheelwright in the other, so with their attached workshops very noisy at times.
An acre and a bit isn't much to run at least 6 cows and 2 horses on so will have another trawl through the archives  to see where he must have leased other land for grazing. The 'long acre' is probably a colonial thing. (roadside verges)
Hoping you can easily shed some light on my two (probably) silly questions,
Regards,
kiwi
Hi Kiwi
Yes, when I read what shoesmith had bought, I also had the same thoughts - but it would have been a shame to kill the cows, they had such pretty names.
Tenement - An apartment building, block of flats or tenement is a multi-unit dwelling made up of several (generally four or more) apartments or flats.
So you could say that possibly several families lived in the same block.
Sackling - Am consulting the Oracle on this one, but its not coming back with any answers except to do with new born calfs and ewes feeding their young or sackling ?(or do they mean suckling)
Hi Chris,
Mmmmm. Tenement/Apartment Block still doesn't sound like a village setting, maybe it's just 'legal-talk', probably just a con- joined house. The idea of the blacksmith and the wheelwright being in close proximity makes sense though.
I wondered if Sackling was a local word for 'chattels'. ( as in 'goods and chattels').
kiwi
Chris,
Could I get an opinion?  Just a referesher:  per the IGI (Batch C148141)  Jane Heasman was christened in Barcombe on 20 Oct. 1782.  Parents Henry Heasman and Elizabeth.
Your visit revealed that the child of Henry and Elizabeth christened 20 Oct. 1782 in Batrcome was Hannah.
All records I've seen:  The IGI record info (which I presume came from the registers and not from private submission), her marriage record (June s, 1801 to Thomas Towner in Alfriston)  the census of 1841, and her death record, give her name as Jane.
I can understand that perhaps she would have been called Jane in the family but I would think her marriage and death records would need to have her "official" name.
Any ideas about this ?
Jann
From the Oxford companion to Local and Family History:
Tenement:Originally any rented property.The term is used to describe the holdings of 'yeomen' and 'husbandmen',which were smaller than farms but larger than the properties of 'cottagers'.In the Victorian period, the word was used to describe the working class houses which were sub-divided horizontally in the major industrials towns.
Barbara ;)
Nothing about the sacklings though,sorry
Hi Barbara,
That sounds better, thank you.  I might add the word Sacklings to my request at the East Sussex Archives, should imagine they would know, when I find out I will post here for one and all to see. Am relieved to find I am not the only one who didn't know what it meant.
