Hi Chris.

Many, many thanks for your very kind offer.

What I would like to know is the birth details for two people:

1.   Mary Allchin in West Firle
2.   George Stace in Arlington or West Firle

I have their marriage details, which show where these two were born but not when, although I am expecting they were born around 1775ish.

Location: Arlington, East Sussex,
Date: 24th Mar 1796:
Groom: George STACE, of this parish
Bride: Mary ALLCHIN, West Firle
Married by Licence

Not sure how much else I can ask of you but if you could check for the parents and any brothers and sisters of George Stace in Arlington or West Firle that would be brilliant, at this stage I have no idea if these two Parishes are STACE strongholds but by the 1841 Census there are almost none living in these Parishes.

Many many thanks.
Darren

Hi Darren

Cant locate a Mary, but did notice these bapt around the same time in the Firle Registers

Jul 1st 1776, Elizabeth Allchin, dau of Henry & Mary
Aug 6th 1777, Henry  son of Henry & Mary
Feb 7th 1779, Thos son of Henry & Mary
Oct 1st 1780, John, son of Henry & Mary

The STACE surname only appears in the registers for Arlington in the 1650, 52, 74 and 76)
Marriage in 1694 and burials 1652, 69, 91.

Sorry I can not be of more help at this time

Hi Chris

How are you, mate? It's a while since we met up down in Hastings and I haven't used the Sussex boards much since then because much of my family history research has been recently concentrated on my Staffordshire ancestors.

Thanks for your kind offer to do look ups at ESRO

I hope that you can help me to sort a few problems identified with my Sussex ancestors.

1. I am looking for the baptism of Mary Gutsell. Probably this took place between 1748 and 1758 at Sedlescombe but could have occurred at Brede or Ewhurst.

2. I have somehow got two baptisms for James Manser Thorpe. The first is a private baptism at Fairlight on 09 May 1824 and the second is also at Fairlight on 18 September 1831 (James's parents are William amd Ruth). I think that the first baptism is correct since it corresponds with the months following the birth. Who was baptised at Fairlight on 18 September 1831?

3. James Manser married Harriet Wilson in 1846 and I have two daughters both called Alice. The first is called Alice Louise is thought to be born at Fairlight about March 1863. The second is Alice Matilda baptised at Fairlight 23 August 1868. Are these both their children? If so presumably the first one died young so is their a burial?

I hope that you can help.

Thanks in advance.

Roger

Hi there Roger

The transcript of the parish register says:
Sep 18th 1831, James Manser Thorpe son of William & Ruth, Butcher,  - privately bapt on 9th May 1824. – but the private baptism is not entered in the register.
(From past experience, If a child was born rather poorly, then it usually had a private baptism in the home in case it did not survive, or else it could not be buried in the local churchyard)

March 27th 1864, William Benjamin Thorpe bapt, son of James & Harriett Thorpe, Labourer
Aug 23rd 1868, Alice Matilda Thorpe bapt, dau of James & Harriett Thorpe

No record of an Alice in 1863 and no burial between 1861 and 1870 of a Thorpe child.

Mary Gutsell is not listed in either Sedlescombe, Ewehurst or Brede between 1748 and 1758

Hope that is of some assistance in your research

Chris - what a very generous offer.

If it's at all possible, I'd be most grateful for any information on a school run by a Frenchman named Henri Etienne Janson (b. abt 1801, died 1878) in Hove from at least 1851, possibly earlier, until the 1870s. I'd be interested in the name of the school (if any), dates, numbers of pupils or indeed anything else about Professor Janson and his school. Census details show that he and his family were at the following addresses in Hove:

1851: 9 Adelaide Crescent
1861: 106 Lansdowne Place
1871: 65 Hova Villas

There were boy boarders with the family at these addresses, but I haven't been able to find out whether the school was based at the successive Janson family homes or whether they simply accommodated a few of the boarders.

Prof. Janson's wife was a relative of mine, and many members of the family (including my great-great-grandfather) were educated at this school.

Many thanks in advance

Anna

Hi Anna

Sorry, but no records were available for me to consult to try and answer this query

Hi Chris,

Could you possibly confirm a baptism for a Stephen Catt in Ewhurst about 1629 please. Also, and I am not sure what early registers are available for Ewhurst, whether there are any Catt/Catte burials in this parish between about 1610 and 1630? I hope that this is not too much to ask, but I would be very grateful for your help.

Best wishes,
Lesley

Hi there Lesley

The transcripts of the Registers for Ewhurst that were on the open shelves in the record office were :
Baptism started in 1696
Burials were from 1697
Marriages from 1558

Unfortunately, we wanted 1610 - 1630

Unfortunately, the information I required was not available

My apologies for this negative answer

Hi Chris
May I take you up on your offer please.

I'm looking for birth details of a Richard Ticehurst  b (I think)  18/7/1786 or 1783
or
James Ticehurst b 1779
or
Samuel Ticehurst b 1786
or
Barbara Ticehurst b 1781

All were born in Eastbourne, possibly St Mary's. and are from the same family.

I am trying to establish their parents. I have found a couple of names from the LDS site ( James Ticehurst and Abigail Pierce) but cannot find any evidence of a married or union for these two, or that they even existed.
I am not sure whether E.Sussex records office will have anything on these dates, but if so, I would appreciate any info you find

Thanks
Jard

Hi there Jard

I found the following

James Ticehurst, son of James & Abigail, Nov 21st 1779
Samuel Ticehurst, son of  James & Abigail, 18 Jul 1786
Barbara Ticehurst, dau of James & Abigail, 18th March 1781
Richard, son of Anne, base born on 2oth July 1783

Sorry, but I could not find a marriage between 1770 and 1790

Hope the above helps

Hello and Thank you for the offer. I am not familiar with the document holdings in the records office but hope these are appropriate. I am looking for:

1) The parents of Elizabeth Ticehurst, born in Catsfield 1804-1805.

2) Parents of Joseph Beavis b. 1781 in Bexhill

3) Parents of Mary Southouse born 1782-83 - possibly in Bexhill.

Thanks so much.

Jann

Have only quoted one request above, but have replied to both of your 'look ups'

Hi there Jann

Jane is listed as Hannah in transcript on Oct 20th –
Hannah Heasman bapt on 20th Oct 1782, dau of Henry & Elizabeth

There was no Elizabeth Ticehurst in Catsfield Register

Bexhill Registers of 1781 baptisms not available as were 1782/83

This was the period covered by those Register transcriptions on the open shelves.
1558 – 1695, 1702 – 1766, 1823 – 1849, 1849 – 1880 baptisms only.

Not a very good set of results was it - my apologies

I would be very pleased to take up your request.

I am hoping to find the marriage of JOHN HIDE (HYDE) to SUSANNAH. ABOUT 1713 (MAYBE BEFORE OR AFTER) in SEAFORD SUSSEX. They are the parents of THOMAS b1715 and twins SUSANNAH AND ELIZABETH born 1729.

Also if you would have time the Bapstism of JOHN which I estimate 1690-1695. any additional informating. Many thanks. Kesannah

Hi there Kesannah

I Checked the Bishops transcripts between 1700 and 1720, but found no entry at all

July 10th 1715, Thomas Hide bapt, son of Thomas & Susanna Hide

the twins baptism in 1729 was not in the transcripts of the parish registers on the open shelves

Also, could not locate a baptism between 1685 and 1695 for John in Seaford

Sorry for my failings
