Hi Chris,
I'm trying to put 'meat on the bones' for John Stace who was a wheelwright in Berwick village. He left with all his family in 1850, but I see from the Burtenshaw papers (p116.)that the wheelwrights shop was up for sale again in 1853 (late White) so am hoping for a description of the shop, house ,implements etc, as John did not seem to bring anything along those lines to NZ, he never practiced the business of the wheelwright professionally in NZ. I imagine he sold the business as a going concern, lock, stock and barrell as it appears to have been done again in 1853.
The other reference (page 211) is for 1851 farming stock, dead and alive. The dead stock will refer to farm implements ( not animals!) This refers I think to one of Johns brother who remained in the UK, so anything descripitive would be interesting.
There might not be much there, but I hope so, and hope it will be interesting for you, not too boring, as you have been kind enough to look for me.
Regards,
kiwi
Hi there Kiwi
I spent some considerable time looking at the notebooks you quoted; they were absolutely absorbing and full of information concerning your ancestors possessions - if I was you, I would contact the East Sussex Record Office to get them to do a full and proper transcription of the 28 pages - it would be well worth it.
Here is just a flavour of the contents, I would not have had the time to transcribe them all.
