Edward WELSMAN Sibury parish records
« on: Friday 27 October 06 00:56 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,
This is my first post and am fairly new to this big jigsaw that we call family history. I am hoping that someone can point me in the right direction on this one as nearly all my results so far have come from census records so I am not sure where to go for parish records etc. My problem is my 3XG grandfather, Edward Welsman who married in Chelsea M'sex but was born abt 1810 in Sidbury. The IGI lists Edward John Bailey Welsman B24 Dec 1810 C13 Jan 1811, mother Ann Welsman. I have found that some other researchers have him listed on one world tree as either Edward Welsman, Edward John Bailey Welsman or just John Bailey. He definitely used the name Welsman after moving to Chelsea and I believe his mother may have married a John Bailey. Can anyone help me find a fathers name or point me in the right direction? I am currently living in Somerset so a trip to Devon would not be to difficult if I know where to go. Many thanks for any suggestions, Bryan.

I'm afraid that you have real problems with the Sidbury records.
Early in the 19th century the Sidbury vicar took all the parish registers home with him. That night his house caught fire and all the registers were destroyed.
As to the whereabouts of surviving Sidbury parish records you have a choice between two buildings in Exeter. The original records are held at the Devon Record Office, while transcriptions are available at the West Country Study Centre next to the main Public Library in the City Centre. The IGI version is based on those transcriptions.

Thanks for that info. That would explain why I have been told by the parish clerk for Devon on genuki that his records only go back to 1813. There must, however be a record somewhere for the link between Ann Welsman and John Bailey. I am sure that this info is correct but would like to know where it came from. I can find no other record listed for either of them. I will probably visit the west country study centre and see what they do have.
