Hi,
As a child, I was told that The Lyle Hill in Greenock, Renfrewshire was named after the Lyle of Tate and Lyle, who was apparently a local man. There was a T&L sugar refiners in Greenock until maybe 15 years ago.
I suggest you get in touch with the Watt Library in Greenock at
http://www.inverclyde.gov.uk/Libraries/index.php?module=article&view=13&MMN_position=11:1:4where I am sure they will be able to help you with some background information.
Sugar was a big business in Greenock, raw sugar being shipped from the Caribbean to Greenock. As well as Tate & Lyle, there was also a Walker's Sugar refinery in the centre of town.
