Sally,
a couple of snippets for you..........
The territory of "ancient" parishes, such as Longbenton were sub-divided into areas of "townships" ( not the most apt term as it had little to do with towns as we understood today). Within a "township" there would be towns/villages/communities.
The area of Longbenton parish was divided into four "townships"... Longbenton area itself, Walker, Killingworth and Weetslade.
Within the Weetslade township lay communities such as Heslerigg/Hazlerigg.
The name of this community was changed to Camperdown in early 1800s.
(Your Admiral Duncan was victorious against a Dutch fleet in the North Sea in Oct 1797)
As you probably know, part of Dundee city is called Camperdown ( my wife is both a Dundonian and a Duncan)
So I wonder if the below are connected in some way...
......... a fledgling community, that lay within the boundaries of Longbenton parish, ends up with name Camperdown,
.........Admiral Duncan from Angus, takes the title Camperdown.
......... Duncans were baptised etc within parish of Longbenton.

Parish marriage records in 1700s usually stated whether the spouses were " native of this parish" or "native of parish of

? "
