DUNCANs - Longbenton
« on: Thursday 26 October 06 00:54 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone

I'm looking into my ancestors on my Duncan line to try and see if I can prove that the Duncan's from Longbenton are related in some way to Admiral Adam Duncan from Lundie, Angus in Scotland, who was also the Viscount of Camperdown (the link has been passed down for generations).

I've managed to go back as far as George Duncan who married Mary Sedgwick on 16 June 1783 in Longbenton.  I've yet to confirm from documentation, but I don't believe he was born there.  I'm guessing George would have been born in the 1760s or a bit earlier.  Admiral Duncan who I'm trying to connect him with was born in 1731.

If anyone has any information on my George Duncan or Admiral Duncan's son's (although I can certainly discount his son Robert Dundas Haldane-Duncan) or maybe nephews, then I'd love to hear from you, to give me an idea where to look next.

I'd also love to hear from anyone else who is researching the Duncan's to see if we have any connections.

Sally.

Sally,

a couple of snippets for you..........

The territory of "ancient" parishes, such as Longbenton were sub-divided into areas of "townships" ( not the most apt term as it had little to do with towns as we understood today). Within a "township" there would be towns/villages/communities.

The area of Longbenton parish was divided into four "townships"... Longbenton area itself, Walker, Killingworth and Weetslade.

Within the Weetslade township lay communities such as Heslerigg/Hazlerigg.

The name of this community was changed to Camperdown in early 1800s.

(Your Admiral Duncan was victorious against a Dutch fleet in the North Sea in Oct 1797)

As you probably know, part of Dundee city is called Camperdown ( my wife is both a Dundonian and a Duncan)

So I wonder if the below are connected in some way...

......... a fledgling community, that lay within the boundaries of Longbenton parish, ends up with name Camperdown,

.........Admiral Duncan from Angus, takes the title Camperdown.

......... Duncans were baptised etc within parish of Longbenton.
-------------------------------------------------------------

Parish marriage records in 1700s usually stated whether the spouses were " native of this parish" or "native of parish of ???? "

Hi Michael

Thanks for the interesting information on a community near Longbenton being called Camperdown.  Very interesting and quite a coincidence, isn't it!?  Hopefully it will prove useful.

I'll post on the board, as I delve deeper into the mystery.

Sally.

Hi Michael

Many thanks for this information.  Hopefully seeing that George Duncan was a native of Sedgwick, Woodhorn, according to the baptism entry for his son George's baptism will hopefully help me to get one step further back.  Still not sure where Admiral Adam Duncan fits in.  Maybe they were uncle and newphew, or something.  Hopefully some light will be shed on it eventually.

I didn't know about George and Mary's daughter Elizabeth, and fifth son (was there a name for him on the register?).  Thanks for that.  Even siblings don't affect my line, I still like to know the whole family.

Anyway, must be off.  I'll be sure to post more as I extend my search, slowly but surely.

Sally.

Sally,

Oops, as you spotted I neglected to give name of George/Mary's "5th son"...

It was DAVID.

Hi Michael

Thanks for that.  I didn't know of David before.  He may have died young, as he doesn't show up on the census, hence the reason I didn't know.

Got to go, kids going mad.

This has made for fascinating reading for me, though I know this post was some time ago! George Duncan was my 5x g/grandfather, my line is through his son George Lyon Duncan & his son John Duncan. I’ve always been curious about the middle name Lyon popping up in many of the children but I still haven’t found the source which I’ve always assumed is the maiden name of a woman who married a Duncan, but there’s plenty time yet!
I was interested to read your comments about David Duncan too.. I’m on Ancestry & there are many trees with copious amounts of pictures & stories about him & his exploits in the early railways. In fact it looks like he may have had a part to play in the invention or manufacture of railway points. I have googled this but couldn’t find him but there are pictures of his Patent from the Queen & all sorts awards. If you can access Ancestry my tree is Gibson Family Tree, name JoeyD13SS I’d love to know how far you have progressed!
