hi althea, this may be a piece of useless information but you never know!!!

i have no idea where people were buried in the johnstone area before 1845.

in 1845 they opened woodside cemetery in paisley, so lots of johnstonians where buried there until 1887.

in 1887 the council opened a cemetery in abbey road elderslie, the most local burial place for johnstonians.

in 1897 they opened kilbarchan cemetery but i have found this to be used many by people from kilbarchan and linwood and the surrounding villages

so if you have anyone in your family tree that fits into the dates above i will certainly visit the graveyards and confirms dates for you should there be gravestones.
helping wherever possible

Hi, I just wanted to make contact about your McDougall connections. I just posted information about my family line but wondered if you had any link with the Eckford/Caverton Mill family?
thanks

Hi Lisa,

Done a search on Ancestry.co.uk, for McDougall in Roxbughshire, Scotland and there a lot there ; 319 results over all the census.

This maybe help your research.

Hi There

I am looking for any information re James McDougall born around 1790 or at least in the 1790's (we think) who married Elizabeth Montgomery or Montgomeri, also most likely to have been born around the same time.  This couple married, possibly 13 March 1816 at Abbey, Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland and had a number of children.  I have read another posting on this site that mentions the family as Robert, Janet, Susana, Alexr, Malcom and James.

My research may or may not be as good, but the children I have are:

Cathrin, Marion, Neil, Robert, Janet, Susan King, Alexander, Mary Stewart, James.

I have information which suggests that the children were all baptised within days of their births and were baptised at The Abby, Paisley. Renfrewshire, Scotland.  I have been told that this is an area of Paisley rather than a church.  I believe that James died about 1843 though another posting does suggest that in: "1841 census  Elizabeth is a widow at Johnstone aged 45, entered as Bell or ?Beth" and I have written down about 1841 on another occasion from other research.

The son, Alexander McDougall, is our direct relative, but I would be interested in any information and references that anyone has on this family.  I am willing to share the information we have re Alexander right down to the present generation, however, I have been so far unable to find out a lot about his family or parents.  I have even gathered a reasonable amount of data on Alexander's wife.

Alexander and his wife and son migrated to Australia and one of his son's Malcolm is my husband's Grandfather.

I look forward to hearing from anyone who can help me with my research on this family and in particular the members of that family left behind in Scotland by Alexander and his wife.

In appreciation
smcd

Hi smcd

Abbey in Paisley was a Parish - sometimes called Abbey Landward but there is also an Abbey in Paisley which did have a burial ground.

folks from Johnstone may have been buried in Abbey cemetary - which is Not in Paisley but Elderslie and opened 1887. Elderslie is the village between Paisley and Johnstone.

before that folks were buried in a lot of cases in churchyards and there are a number in and around Paisley which when Woodside and Hawkhead opened to the west and east of the town respectively stopped being used as working cems.

Hope this helps explain the abbey bit
