Hello Again Joe

Thanks for the assistance once again.  However, we believe we do have the correct info pertaining to Alexander McDougall, son of James McDougall and Elizabeth Montgomery.  Alexander married Agnes Muir from Kilwinning, Ayr, Scotland on 29h Aug 1851 in Kilwinning, Ayr, Scotland.  Their children were as follows:

Isabella...b 9th Jan 1852 in Ardrossan, Scotland
James...b 1855 and died 1855 at sea
John...b.24th Jan 1857 in Ipswich, Colony of New South Wales, Australia
Alexander...b3rd March 1858 in Ipswich, Colony of New South Wales, Aust
Robert...b. 8th Oct 1860 in Ipswich, Qld, Australia
Malcolm...b.27th July 1862 in Ipswich, Qld, Australia
James...b. 2nd Aug 1867 Ipswich, Qld, Aust
Agnes...b. 8th July 1873 in Ipswich, Qld, Australia

I have references of all the births that were here in Australia and reference to the 1st two from the shipping records.  Have also traced the family back on the wife's (Agnes) side.  She was Agnes Muir born 6 Nov, 1829 in Kilwinning, Ayr, Scotland.  She and Alexander married in Kilwinning.  Her parents were John Muir and Isabella Smith and they lived at Bridgend Lane in Kilwinning.

Isabella was one of the daughters of Hugh Smith and Janet McBride and they married on 17 May 1828.  John's parents were Robert Muir and Jean Jack.

Thanks again though for trying, but I am sure we have this information correct.

Regards
smcd (Shirley)

Hi Shirley

I have done a quick search on Scotlands people re the births of the children of James and Elizabeth.

These were :

03/11/1816 MCDOUGAL CATHARIN JAMES MCDOUGAL/ELIZABETH MONTGOMERI FR1228 F Abbey /RENFREW 559/ 0030 0512

2 08/06/1838 MCDOUGAL JAMES JAMES MCDOUGAL/ELIZABETH MONTGOMERY FR2267 M Abbey /RENFREW 559/ 0070 0158

3 07/11/1834 MCDOUGAL MALCOM JAMES MCDOUGAL/ISABELLA MONTGOMERY FR2223 M Abbey /RENFREW 559/ 0070 0072

4 12/07/1829 MCDOUGAL MARY STEWART JAMES MCDOUGAL/ELIZABETH MONTGOMERY FR2142 F Abbey /RENFREW 559/ 0060 0292

5 11/01/1819 MCDOUGAL NEIL JAMES MCDOUGAL/ELISABETH MONTGOMERY FR1255 M Abbey /RENFREW 559/ 0030 0565

6 15/04/1821 MCDOUGAL ROBERT JAMES MCDOUGAL/ELIZABETH MONTGOMERIE FR2011 M Abbey /RENFREW 559/ 0060 0041

7 06/05/1827 MCDOUGALL ALEXANDER JAMES MCDOUGALL/ELIZABETH MONTGOMERY FR2115 M Abbey /RENFREW 559/ 0060 0238

8 11/05/1823 MCDOUGALL JANET JAMES MCDOUGALL/ELIZABETH MONTGOMERY FR2045 F Abbey /RENFREW 559/ 0060 0102

9 12/06/1825 MCDOUGALL SUSAN KING JAMES MCDOUGALL/ELIZABETH MONTGOMERY FR2089 F Abbey /RENFREW 559/ 0060 0188

10 18/10/1831 MCDOWAL MARGARET STEWAR JAMES MCDOWAL/ELIZA MONTGOMERY FR2170 F Abbey /RENFREW 559/ 0060 0346

As you can see James Surname has been mistranscribed in a few places but am confident these are the same family. But this confirms the list you have as being correct I think. Marion is not there tho. It would seem she wasn't part of this family and if you look at Catherin's date of birth it would be impossible.

Hi Shirley

There is also evidence on Scotlands People to support Susan McDougall marrying John Duncan

30/11/1851 MCDOUGAL SUSAN JOHN DUNCAN/FR3222 F Abbey /RENFREW 559/ 0090 0438

To answer your point about her middle name - this could have been a family name, family friend or even someone like an employer or a Minister that the family knew well (was often done as a mark of respect). I have a lot of instances of this in my own family.

There is no marriage on Scotland's People between a Susan McDougall and Andrew Morren. (I have searched using widcards across the whole of Scotland and nothing there).

Catherin as first girl would normally be named after her maternal grandmother tho the naming convention isn't 100% foolproof - tho a pretty good guide. Will see if I can find a birth for Elizabeth with parents John and Catherin(e).

Hi shirley

Apologies this is piecemeal but have to do in chunks or will get tied in knots!

Re Malcolm - see the list of children above. There is a Malcolm born 1834 so that answers that one!

Hi Shirley

You queried Alexander being listed as a mill worker at aged 14. This would have been quite normal for the time as a lot of children either did not attend school at all or only on a part-time basis. So I don't think is a transcription error.

You also asked where the name John would have come from in relation to Alexander and Agnes's family. Agnes' father being John would be where I'd put my money.
