It  looks  like  Thomas Stannard was an aussie  and went
to enland  either during  the war or  just after married  the  marriage certificate details are on  the  war record and brought  his bride  back  to australia  where  they  had George  in 1920
He  may  have come back  with  the Australian forces  and she  has come a  bit  later  have a  good read  of Thomas William Stannards war record ....regards jenn

Silas,

http://www.naa.gov.au/The_collection/recordsearch.html

you better read the war record - everything is explained! even a copy of the marriage particulars - they married Sept 1919 - his father is John Stannard, butcher.  She was Ellen Wrigglesworth Clarkson, father's details Nil.
On on the very last page - it says he returned to Australia on discharge WITH his wife - this was November 1919 - names the ship.

Gosh everybody - don't know how to thank you all enough - you have certainly been busy.  Sorry to be so long in replying, but got delayed by visitors.  I am now going to look at the war records, can't wait!!  Be back later and thank you so much.

Well, read the war records - fascinating !!  Especially the letter from Ellen prior to her marriage pleading for Thomas to be discharged in England and about her elderly mother depending on her, etc.  Thank you again all of you for your kind help.

Forgot to tell you all that Ellen's grandmother who she talks about in her letter asking for Thomas' discharge from the army was my mother's grandmother (my gt grandmother).  You can find out more about Ellen's birth in a thread of mine in the West Yorkshire board entitled 'Illegitimate birth' which I have just added to today.
