Lower Halstow
« on: Wednesday 25 October 06 13:00 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm looking for parish records for the village of Lower Halstow. Does anyone know which parish it's in and or whether the records have survived. I'm looking particularly for baptisms around 1800 - 1830.

Thanks

No, there is a place called Lower Halstow - but in terms of an actual Parish name, its just Halstow according to ParLoc  - so possibly an area within the Parish itself ?

Just noticed that there is a Parish 'High Halstow' on the IGI .... might be worth a prod ?

High Halstow
 Baptisms Batch C131372   1735-1874
 Marriages Batch M131372   1735-1836

Looking again, they arent close together tho .... sorry

Lower Halstow is the name of the actual parish (church of St Margaret) in East Kent near Sittingbourne (High Halstow comes under West Kent) and the church records are at the Centre for Kentish Studies at Maidstone.  Sittingbourne library do hold copies of some parish registers for their area but I'm not sure whether they have those for Lower Halstow :-\

Some entries from the Lower Halstow registers have been transcribed and are available on CD from the Kent Family History Society too (bp 1692-1876 ............... m 1692-1837 ............ bur 1691-1812) http://www.kfhs.org.uk/public2.htm

and, of course, we can always hope that some kind Rootschatter may be able to help out if they have access to the baptisms etc. :-\

I've checked out the Cityark site before (Great site!!!!) and have found High Halstow but not Lower and why :(

It's great to know that records exist. Will just need to wait and see :)

Thanks again

Hi Adrianne,

This is my understanding of why you will not find what you seek on the Medway CityArc site.  If I am incorrect, someone will correct me and we will all be better informed.

Medway is a part of Kent that is self governed.  Because of this you may not always find them included in data bases that the rest of Kent includes.  Medway used to be the sub-districts of Chatham, Gillingham and Rochester and the parishes included within them.  The CityArc site does include some Parishes that do surround these main Sub-districts.

High Halstow is part of the Hoo Registration District and Lower Halstow is part of the Milton Registration District.  It looks like Hoo is included in the CityArc database but only the Parish of Rainham is included from the Milton Registration District as it was a boarding Parish.

For a better idea of the old Registration Districts, you can see maps of each at the following website:  www.kent-opc.org.uk  Another thought would be to contact the library in Halstow.  I have found that the librarians are very helpful when you get stuck.  It doesn't hurt to ask.  Lower Halstow is known as Halstow now.

I hope that helps,

I think that Lower Halstow is in the Diocese of Canterbury whereas High Halstow is in the Diocese of Rochester.
This may explain why the records for High Halstow are with the Medway Archives.
