Query re Scunthorpe
« on: Wednesday 25 October 06 10:51 BST (UK) »
Sorry if this is the dumbest question this year but is there more than one cemetery in Scunthorpe.

I'm looking for a grave in the 1950-1960 era.

I have tried Google etc but if there is a cemetery there I couldn't find it under "Scunthorpe Cemetery" (and various versions) or maybe I'm just having a bad day  ::)

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Di

Perhaps here ...

Including "Animal Heaven"  ::)

EDIT: I see the link I gave is not totally successful ... you must search England/Humberside to find the Scunthorpe cemeteries.

Hi,
we have 3 cemeteries as well as the crematorium Brumby, Crosby and Scunthorpe.
Not sure how close you are to Scunny but the crematorium has an index to nearly all the burials in the Scunthorpe area.

Thank you Geoff E and Nuttyone (Helen),

Appreciate your help - the "Animal Heaven" sounds like the place my ancestors would be  ;D.

The index for the Crem. looks like a great idea - thanks Helen (any idea if it is available on line?) - I'll investigate further.

Appreciate your help

Di

Morning
I am pretty sure they are not on line but the office staff there were very helpful when I called in.
It is only a very small office but perhaps if you emailed them or gave them a ring they could help.

The information I got was

Date of Burial

Grave Number

or where in the case of my grandparents the ashes were scattered

Tel. 01724 280289

Email: crematorium@northlincs.gov.uk.

Another site I found by chance yesterday, not sure if anybody else has posted the link anywhere is

http://www.gravestonephotos.com/index.php

Not complete by all means but seems like it could be useful

Hi Helen,

Thanks for all that information. I will email them and see if they have any details. I'll also check the other website for any ancestors - looks like it could be a very useful and interesting site.

Much appreciated

Regards
Di

Thanks for the offer Helen. I am looking for my husband's grandparents grave sites so when we visit (from Oz) next year we can pay our respects.

I haven't ordered their death certs yet so can't provide much info (except year and qtr). What sort of information does the library have that could help with a family in the mid 1900's?

The family I'm tracing is the Mather family, James died 1965 (aged 89) and his wife Hilda died a couple of years prior (if memory serves me??)

I don't have any other info about them in Scunthorpe - I'm just beginning the l-o-n-g search for descendants at this stage.

Any suggestion would be most welcome.

Thanks
Di

We have quite a few parish registers and an index to one of the local papers, in fact it is quite a good local library for researching your family tree for the area.

They have the newspaper index on line I have just looked and there are 3 mentions of MATHER

http://www.northlincs.gov.uk/NorthLincs/Leisure/libraries/localandfamilyhistory/familyhistory/Surnames/

Only trouble is I am now searching outside of the area for my Nutt's so have just decided to try find out a bit more about my mothers side.

I will see what I can find out for you
