Hi there,

Welcome to Rootschat,I'm sure you'll find us a very helpful and friendly bunch here  ;D

Firstly might I suggest that you start your own thread with a request for whatever you'd like us to find out for you. It's probably a good idea to tell us what you already have ie Census or BMD info. And what years you need.

I live in Higham Ferrers, which is much smaller than it's next door neighbour of Rushden. When we moved here 28 years ago the town had a population of about 5500 people. We have had lots of new houses built and there must be close on an extra 1000 now?

It is now quite difficult to tell where the two towns separate.

Both Crabb Street and Griffith Street are still there(google search it) the area has a few factories and small terraced houses. Most people used to work in the shoe factories around town. The two roads actually run parrallel to each other.

They can be seen in context on a local map at www.streetmap.co.uk

You were surprised that your ancestors had so many kids..........you'd be even more surprised if you saw how small these houses are!
My grandad grew up in Cheshire in a two up, two down terraced house, one of 12 kids!!!

All the best

Carol

You might get some info on places in Rushden on here
www.rushdenheritage.co.uk   or google in Rushden Hearts and Soles.
Its a fairly new site but they have the census for around there. some memorial details...........all sorts.
Good luck. I used to live in Rushden myself

The houses were small and the families large, but don't forget that by the time the younger ones were born, the older ones were out at work, and very often 'lived in'. My mum lived in a 2-bedroom cottage as a girl; her parents and the baby had one room, the 3 girls had the other, and the 4 boys slept in the 'attic'
