1841/1851 census - WALKER in Govan (Glasgow)
« on: Tuesday 24 October 06 09:56 BST (UK) »
The marriage certificate of James Walker (my gggf) from 1855 records that he was living in the parish of Govan in Glasgow, and was the son of William Walker, a manufacturer.

James was born in Paisley (Renfrewshire) in 1826.

I would really appreciate it, if somebody could look up the family in the 1841 and 1851 censuses.

Here are the names and ages (in 1841) of the family members that I have been able to identify:

William Walker, manufacturer
Margaret (nee Cross)
Margaret, 18
Andrew, 16 – married Isabella Reid in 1849, became a dyer and skinner
James, 14
Isabella, 12
Elizabeth, 10

The children were all born in Paisley.

Many thanks,

Justin

Hello Ozybob,

Your data went before I had time to respond. Thank you for looking for my Walkers.

In the meantime, I have spent too much on Scotlandspeople and found the same James. I am fairly certain that they are not my family.

However, on FreeCEN I have found James' siblings and mother at

Piece: SCT1841/573 Place: Paisley-Renfrewshire Enumeration District: 11
Civil Parish: Paisley High Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 11 Page: 6
Address: 57 Canal St

Margaret Walker, 40, Ind, Yes
Margaret Walker, 15,  , Y
Andrew Walker, 15, cloth shop apprentice, Y
Isabella Walker, 10, , Y
Wilhelmina Walker, 5, , Y

Sadly, James and his father, William, must have been out and about on business. Little sister, Elizabeth, must have died.

I'd love to find them in the 1851 census and pin down the parents' ages and origins. Is Scotlandspeople the only way?

Justin
