Anyone lnow anything about the Malcolm family of Dundee?  George Malcolm was one of the founding fathers of Malcolm Ogilvie, jute manufacturers in the latter part of the 19th century. His father James was also into jute.  His daughter was my husband's gr grandmother.

My gggrandmother was born Ann Malcolm in 1789 and died in Dundee in 1841> her father was named William Malcolm. All I know is he died possibly in 1804 based on a reference in the Howff burial records.

Dear FST,snonwolf and ev,
I am also looking for a John Malcolm who married on 11/6/1852 in Dundee,Scotland to a Catherine Stewart Findlay(nee Barrie).
She was a widow and had 1 baby daughter Agnes Findlay. They emigrated to Australia in 1853 and I have their history here.
Any help on Malcolms line.
Thanks,Carolyn

Hi,

James Malcolm was the owner of James Malcolm and Sons - Chapelshade Works - flax spinners and manufacturers. The works were situated at Bell Street in Dundee.

In 1831 it was the first mill to spin jute by machine.

James married Catharine Kay (Key/ Keay) on 9th November 1822 in Monifieth and they had 7 children. The youngest daughter Isabella married Peter Wilson, a master seed crusher, brother of my great grandfather.

Helen 4 December 1837
Jean 2 June 1840
Isabella  9 August 1842
Peter 19 August 1829
James 15 March 1824
Agnes  6 January 1835
Alexander 1 September 1827

Hi,

Thank you for the additional children. I haven't researched the Malcolms that much, as Isabella isn't in the direct line. Which one of the daughters was your husband's great grandmother? By the way, the Wilsons are my hubbie's family, mine are all in the Netherlands.

I don't know exactly when Catherine Key died but there are two wills recorded for James (On Scotlandspeople), one from 1854 and one in 1866, I guess the latter would be the correct one.

When Isabella married in 1868 she was living at 1 Dudhope Terrace with her stepmother and both James and Catherine are listed as being deceased.

Hello everyone

James Malcolm actually had three wives!  The first was Grace Davidson and she had one son, George Malcolm who later went into the jute industry and is my husband's gr gr grandfather.  Not sure when she died but he married Cathering Key on 11.11.1822 (she was born about 1800).  They had 8 children and she died in December 1845.  His third wife was Elizabeth Johnstone who he married on 6.12.1848.  They had one son, John, born 8.9.1849

Anyone managed to get any further back from James?
