15th Hussars
« on: Sunday 22 October 06 15:06 BST (UK) »
One of my ancestors was in the 15th Hussars in 1907. Is there any on-line information I can acces to locate where they were, what they did, and if he died in action? Or is it another trip to Kew?

Hello Meles
Although not online, there is a book which will help. Its called XVth{The Kings} Hussars 1759-1913,  by H C Wylly   and published by Caxton & Co , London 1914. I know they were based at Longmoor in August 1914.
Regards
Alan

Got so used to computers, that I'd quite forgotten that once upon a time there were things called "books". Thanks for that. Off to the library!

Still hoping to find names, though, somewhere (apart from Kew!)

My relative was married in Westminster in 1907. Possibly just back from, or about to go to India or South Africa.

Hi Meles
I picked up one of my G uncles in the 1911 census, who was serving in the 15th Hussars in South Africa, he was Arthur Wilfred Harris reg no 4763 Corporal / saddler, date of entry into the war 16th of the 8th 1914 according to his MIC, but I dont know when he joined the Hussars ?

Hi Meles

The National Archives have a set of army lists. They will tell you where the regiment was, plus where in the UK the Depot was as well.

That is the only thing you will find in Kew - apart from free access to Ancestry and Findmypast. If his 12 year enlistment ended in 1913 or before, you need FindMyPast. Otherwise they will be in WW1 records on Ancestry - if the survived the 1940 fire. His DoB would help. If he was 30 in 1914 or later, you need Ancestry.

Ken
