Hi Julie

The 'lodgers' at 85 South Milton St in the 1901 census were Alfred Charles Rankin and Maud Louise Rankin. The 1901 census was taken on 31 March, the same that that they got married! Details on the certificate are: -

Alfred Charles Rankin   25   Gas Fitter
(father - James Rankin (dec’d), Gas Manager)

Maud Louise Quarm   21
(father - James Henry Quarm, occupation - Cooper)

The marriage was witnessed by John Henry Ellis and Caroline Emma Ellis.

I've being trying to find James Quarm in 1891 and 1901 as well.

What's your interest in these Quarms?  I have Quarm ancestors in the Plymouth/Kingsbridge area, and have been looking at all the Quarms I can find on the census, to see if they all originate in Devon. So far they all do (or Cornwall).  Would like to find out if it's a one off family name, or if their are a couple of separate beginnings for the name in that area. It will probably be impossible to find out, but it's quite interesting seeing what they were all up to.

My Great-grandma was Ethel Emily Quarm, and she was descended from John Quarm 1746-1801 of Plymouth and Sarah Murch.

How far back have you managed to get on your line? Do you know who James Henry's parents were?  I found his birth reg on the index, but couldn't find him as a child.   Also I have a Henry Quarm on my tree, for who I cannot find a birth, or a death, and who disappears from the census when James Henry appears.  I was going to get James and Emily's marriage cert to see if they were one and the same, but you may be able to save me £7!

I hadn't realised that Maud was James Henry's daughter, as she wasn't on the census returns I had looked at.

You can have a look at my family tree. Click on the little globe thingy. I will send you a PM with the password.

Julie,

I only began my research at the start of the year so I can't really tell you much at this stage.

Maud's age on the marriage certificate is 21, indicating that she should be on the 1881 and 1891 census returns. I've found James, Emily and family in 1881 in Stafford but Maud is not listed. I suspect that age on the marriage certifcate is incorrect. I was told that Maud was born in the workhouse in Stafford but haven't proved this (yet). I was also told that Maud's mother was called Minnie Saunders and that she was born in Dodbrook. There was a Emily Minnie Quarm who died in 1908 in Plymouth, so there looks like some truth in this.

At present all I have linking Maud to James Henry is his name on the marraige certificate.

I'll keep you upto date as I find out more.

Hi Julie,

Just received marriage cert for James and Emily.

23rd Feb 1867 at the Parish Church Biggleswade.

James Quarm / full age / bachelor / occupation = cooper / residence quoted as Biggleswade (nothing else) / Father = James Quarm who was a carpenter.

Emily Sanders / full age / spinster / occupation = <blank> / residence Biggleswade / Father = Owen Sanders who was a horse dealer

Still no closer to finding James in 1891/1901!

James Henry Quarm died 25/06/1903 at 85 South Milton St. Age was given as 59 years and occupation as Cooper. Informant was Louisa Rankin (daughter) also of the same address. This would suggest that the "Charles" Quarm on the 1901 census is actually James Henry.

As Maud Louise is calling herself Louisa, I am wondering if she could be the Louisa at 77 Clare Buildings in 1891.

Have looked at that 1891 census return. How bizarre!  It must be them.  They have the right children living at home, although Caroline seems to have turned into Catherine, and James is this time called William!  Perhaps the problem was Emily's Bedfordshire accent.
Given this family's habit of adopting middle names and dropping first names willy-nilly, I'm even more inclined to think that James Henry, is Henry son of James and Catherine Judith.
It's always possible that James Henry lied about his father's proffession when he got married, and mentioned the trade practised by his grandfather and uncles instead. Perhaps the in-laws wouldn't have approved of a 'beer- seller'.
We know James Henry's father was James, and I  haven't found any other suitable James Quarms in Devon..
Some proof would be nice!
